Re: Sad News from Davenport's Magic in London

I was born in London and lived about 30 mins away from Davenports. It was a big part of my childhood and I used to spend all my pocket money in there. I moved away from London in the early 2000s so don't know what it was like of late. Either way, it is a shame, it had a very special feel to it seein...

If you go to about 4 minutes in Michael Vincent puts over eloquently a great deal of the stuff we have been talking about in this thread. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_KNInBxgSM The part that interests me is only brief and I don't agree with many of his philosophies but never-the-less I respect ...

I vaguely remember Roy Benson writing somewhere that it is a good thing to touch a prop even for a moment so things don't appear too impossible. I suspect you are on the right track. Incidentally kids are far quicker to catch a secret than adults are. Of course with twins you get double trouble! Th...

Re: Magical Gestures and Flourishes

You make some interesting points. In essence, I think a gesture has to be an "organic" action rather than a contrived one. I really think this makes the difference. If you look at some of the top performers you never question their actions, movements or gestures. I really feel that somethi...

Re: Magical Gestures and Flourishes

Thank you, Brad, for your thoughtful response. I want to make it very clear that my initial posted question along with my replies are in no way insinuating that I have the same feeling about ALL MAGIC. This is far from the case, my magic tastes have changed as I have got older and I am sure that is ...

Re: Magical Gestures and Flourishes

And to the point of gestures. My new favorite card thing uses two magical gestures the second of which is an intentionally chosen snap. I just watched an adult human being, upon seeing the card change after the snap, grab it, turn it over, snapped herself, and then checked to see if it changed. Wel...

Re: Magical Gestures and Flourishes

Charm. Fred Kaps was dripping with it. Tommy Wonder, a widely acknowledged modern master, used all sorts of gestures and flourishes. He was charming as hell. If you had described Milo and Roger’s act to me before I saw it, I would tell you it wasn’t my cup of tea. But I saw it and I was charmed, as...

Re: Magical Gestures and Flourishes

I suppose I should say that all said and done magic is a form of entertaining and maybe this is being put under the lens a little too much. Of late I just noticed a trend of copycat style acts that made me want to vent my disdain. BUT as much as there are copycat acts out there there are also some w...

Re: Magical Gestures and Flourishes

Hmm.... each to their own. Everyone knows that when they go and see an act they are going to be fooled or tricked. They might even come away with the thought that what they just witnessed is totally unexplainable. There is a big difference in this than someone actually thinking the magic is real als...

I think it is also a fair point to say that don't be so gullible to think an audience will buy into anything. I think that is where the problem also lies.

Re: Magical Gestures and Flourishes

I think you hit the nail on the head, Brad. It must be something that is done in context and I suppose that the right gesture at the right time done within keeping with one's persona/personality is fine as it is believable. It is this copycat mentality that makes every gesture unbelievable and cliché.

Re: Magical Gestures and Flourishes

I understand what you all are saying and I am by no means trying to undermine magic or the need for a sense of theater, artistic flair or flamboyancy. I think where the trouble lies is when a magician fools himself/herself in believing that the audience sees the sincerity in their act by such moves ...

Re: Magical Gestures and Flourishes

Maybe this is all down to preference and taste rather than what is right and what is wrong then. I suppose what I am getting at is normal and natural gestures are fine but over the top corny ones are detrimental to the effect. Maybe it is actually a mix of a person's mannerisms and gestures. Of late...

Re: Magical Gestures and Flourishes

Re: Magical Gestures and Flourishes

I agree with mostly all that you say, Mark. When I was a kid I struggled to find that unique personality as I was (and still am) somewhat of an introvert. The hard part is that you cannot false a made-up personality just so you can put together an act and call yourself a magician. I have seen many p...

Re: Magical Gestures and Flourishes

I actually meant to extend my opening question to include the second part of my heading about flourishes. Mark, I do understand that flourishes are different. It still kind of poses the same question though as too many flourishes in an effect or routine can actually weaken the effect and even misdir...

Magical Gestures and Flourishes

My pet hate is over-accentuated magical gestures, snaps of the fingers, waving over things, etc... I personally don't think you need it in order to build tension or create a magical moment and if anything I think it cheapens the effect. What are your thoughts on this? :)
