I love that stuff. I saw another Japanese group do something similar and, like this one, the black art was not particularly well hidden, nor is it trying to be. I get the sense that the audience is being allowed to see it so that they still get the effect and get to appreciate the principle.
I, on the other hand, would love to see this with really well done black art so that all of the black is truly invisible.

This isn't magic, it's puppetry. It's a Japanese puppetry art form called Bunkaru and you're supposed to be aware of the puppeteers and their skillfull minpulations.
