Im trying to locate the originator of the coin from bill effect. My first encounter with it was in a book for laymen by Milbourne Christopher, if my memory serves me correctly. I later found it in Bobos New Modern Coin Magic under the title Silver Lining. The New edition of Bobos is dated 1966.
Ive been told theres a citation for Dino R. Mazzas Dinos Silver Phantasy in the New Phoenix, No. 388, March 1964, p. 379. This was a memorial issue as Mazza died in February of that year.
Can anyone offer an earlier date?
Thanks in advance,
bill

I think Jerry Andrus had work on this concept earlier than '62????

I couldn't go to the Portland Society tonight, or I would have asked him...

"Deck and Dollars", from Andrus Deals You In, from 1956, produces silver dollars from between two playing cards. More Sleightly Slanted Lecture Notes from 1974 has "Slot Machine," which produces a coin from an index card.

I don't think I've seen Jerry produce a coin from a bill. But then, I haven't seen everything.

Milt Kort produced a half dollar from a dollar bill. His trick was published in 1962 in Kort is Now in Session. Im not sure if its the earliest, but its before the stuff in The New Phoenix...

Bill:

I think I've got an extra copy, I'll rummage around and if I find it, it's yours.

I know one of the guys in SAM a couple of years ago in a teach in session (with Jerry's permission) reproduced the coin from card.

Philippe,
I didn't locate that credit. Steve Minch did the research of Potter's index and found it.

For those who don't possess The Master Index To Magic in Print compiled by Jack Potter, here is the chronological list of Coin Production from Bill, excerpts from Volume 5, 1970, page 406.

March 1943, Genii, Vol 7, N7, page 241, Half After One by Godfrey Peter
August 1947, Hugard's Magic Monthly, Vol 5, N3, page 344, Change for a Dollar by Baker Al
March 1948, The Linking Ring, Vol 28, N1, page 63, Dollar Devilry by Lambert Hubert
April 1950, The Linking Ring, Vol 30, N2,page 44, Bill to Coins by Cook John Brown
June 1950, Hugard's Magic Monthly, Vol 8, N1, page 671, Silver from Dollar by Godfrey Peter (described by Christopher Milbourne)
Sept. 1950, Hugard's Magic Monthly, Vol 8, N4, page 730, Dollar Metamorphosis by Morris Paul
August 1951, The Linking Ring, Vol 31, N6, page 76, Making Change by Houghton Norman
Oct. 1956, Genii, Vol 21, N2, page 52, A Dollar Bill by Andrus Jerry
March 1958, The New Phoenix, N348, page 217, Ballantine's Silver Dollar by Ballantine
Feb. 1959, The Gen, Vol 14, N10, page 293, Goyno Galore by Lambert Hubert
March 1960, Hade-E-Gram MagiZette, Vol 2, N3, page 3, Double Dollar by Anonymous
Dec. 1961, Genii, Vol 26, N4, page 148, Prelude to Coins Thru' the Table by Rollins Walt
1962, Kort Is Now in Cession, page 21, Half from One by Kort Milton
March 1964, The New Phoenix, N388, page 379, Dino's Silver Phantasy by Mazza Dino R.

I haven't checked all these references but, for instance, this one "The Linking Ring, Vol 30, N2, april 1950, page 44, Bill to Coins by Cook John Brown" is not a production but a transformation. You show a two dollars bill then you change it in four half dollars.

I don't have a copy on hand, but there is a coin from bill effect in Karl Fulves' Self Working Coin Magic. I believe it lists some names associated with the plot.

hope that helps

Jerry Andrus describes a coin from bill production called Dollar Bill Delusion in "Nameless Notes" (1964). He also has a way to vanish and reproduce a pen from a dollar bill (in "More Sleightly Slanted").

The Karl Fulves book also includes an effect called Hyper Banking (page 129), which involves a coin vanishing into a slot in a piece of cardboard. The original (duly credited) is E. Brian MacCarthy's Disappearing Hole from his book "Impromptu" (London, 1936). The idea is quite similar to Jerry Andrus' Slot Machine from "More Sleightly Slanted".
