So, America does steak better than England and I always look forward to eating your dead cows.

Urban spoon doesn't seem to find a decent steaks near the hotel? Anyone know the area? Recommendations. I need to get that larry horowitz dude a steak I've been told.

I've heard about two very good restaurants in Orlando, one on the same road, though several miles from, our convention. Damned if I can remember the names, though.

Brad Henderson knows the name of one. Perhaps he can remember the other one we heard mentioned at TAOM.

Richard you are probably thinking of Charley's Steak House, here is there website http://www.talkofthetownrestaurants.com/charleys.html it is North on Orange Blossom Trail Rt 441. This steak house has been there for years and it is expensive. It is located in a bad section of town, so lock your rental car. They have other locations around town that are safer.

Christini's is one of the best Italian restaurants you will find in the country. It is nearly next door to the morton's steak house. Christini's is a true fine dining experience. They have a veal chop which is amazing. The best polenta I have ever had. And I love their creme brle. At one time they were a Michelin 3 star winner - meaning, worth a journey to the country to dine there - and have numerous others accolades. Not a place for a quick bite but a real dining experience. They also have an acclaimed wine cellar.

There are a couple of ruth's Chris steak houses in the Orlando area as well. Not everyone loves their steak preparation (lots of butter, but you can order without) but it's a popular high end steak house.

It was Ruth Chris that converted me to steak.

I didn't think I liked it, imagine that.

And was at a dinner in Americanland and everyone on the table ordered steak and I asked for chicken. Everyone laughed at me.

When the food came the person next to me made me take one bite of her steak. It was like the epiphany scene in the blues brothers. Light came down from the heavens and I suddenly realised how amazing steak is!

Haven't looked back!

The problem with Ruth's Chris stead house is that they are wildly inconsistent from location to location. I have been to some that are great, and others that were terrible. One of the reasons that I like Morton's is that it's consistent no matter where you are in the US.

I concur with RK's take on Ruth's Chris. I've eaten at the original as well as at the local outlet, and had a very mixed experience. The butter just doesn't do it for me--it's all about the meat.

I enjoy Morton's, which is quite good (that meat trolley always cracks me up--especially with the live lobster).

Since ya'll will be in Florida, have you considered trying Don Shula's steakhouse? Unlike many athletic-related restaurants, this chain is supposed to be excellent.

However, all that said, IMHO the best steakhouses I've dined in have been the locally owned ones, especially in the Midwest.

Hey, Damian--while you're in the US--just remember, it's just a hop, skip, and a jump from loving steak to loving good ol' American barbeque!

Oh I love me some barbeque. Over here, people tend to just cook the meat over direct heat, it burns on the outside and is raw in the middle.

This summer, I've been researching how you guys do it from a variety of websites and youtube videos, learned all about indirect heat and it totally changed the way I cook! The grill has never been used so much...Steaks, baby back ribs, chicken, and an amazing flat bread recipe that takes about 2 minutes to cook. Delicious.

I'm very up for going to a BBQ place if there is one near the convention hotel!

BBQ is an art, but not really in Scotland. Here, people tend to have either a disposable tray they bought three years ago, or a rusting Argos BBQ sitting in the corner, still with the coals from the last session inside. The idea is that as soon as the rain breaks for a couple of hours, you grab whatever you have in the cupboard and wave it at the flame.

My neighbour once barbecued some custard, which I think demonstrates the phenomenon quite well...

I hear ya', Kevin--that's a beautiful cut of meat, and I sure wouldn't kick it off my plate (unless it's going down my throat).

I just think the combination of BBQ and a prime rib cut is a special kind of food genius.

As you've said though, horses for courses--it's all good!

It can be quite difficult to get a reservation at Le Cellier, which is in the Canada Pavillion in Epcot's World Showcase, which also requires theme park admission.

Besides, Morton's serves a better steak than Le Cellier. :)

I've never heard of Morton's but sounds right up my street - will be looking to pay a visit in the next few weeks.

Le Cellier is very good and I recall a few visits to an excellent Ruth's Chris Steak House in Toronto a few years back.

Do they have a Gallaghers Steakhouse in Florida - I've enjoyed steak dinners there in NYC and Vegas?

There are good Chinese restaurants in most major US cities. I imagine Orlando has some good Chinese food, but considering you're from Scotland, the Chinese place in the food court will probably seem really good to you. Or is that statement going to get me lynched? :)

See, that's the thing about haggis. Good haggis (the homemade stuff you get in the family butchers up in Bruntsfield or Morningside) is great. Bad haggis is bogging. Ironically, there's no grey area.

Oh yes, I forgot the USA was the culinary capital of the world..... :-)

Not sure about Moo Goo Gai* Haggis, but a few of the nicer Indian** restaurants in Scotland certainly do haggis pakora or samosa starters.

* I've only ever experienced 'Moo Goo Gai' Chinese dishes in the USA - have never heard tell of them anywhere else. And who in heaven's name is General Tso? Did he used to keep a lot of chickens?
* Indian restaurants are rather few and far between in the USA
