Fast paced card productions, Cards/Fans everywhere.... YAWN YAWN YAWN.

There is something special about Yu Ho Jin. His whole graceful and slow paced performance style yet he fries your brain.

I have yet to be moved by any of the 'cutting edge' manipulators. I look forward to seeing something that will change my mind.

The Organisers have deemed fit to follow the awards ceremony with a very "special" closing show destroying the very last scrap of dignity that fism blackpool possessed.

I am dying slowly inside.

Audience booing carl charlesworth and dave allen during closing gala show ... This is an unmitigated disaster.

Derek lever must be so proud having single handedly produced 3 of the worst fism gala shows in recent history

OK Craig, you "hooked" me. I'm trusting that at some point you'll supplement with details so that I can better appreciate the train wreck that apparently exceeded the predictions of most. [And I thought the banquet in Lisbon was a "Lord of the Flies" disaster. . . ]

Omigod: after the wonderful afternoon Grand Prix show, one of the best magic shows I've ever seen, we had the presentation of the awards this evening.

And then ....

And then .... there was a show! A show that is not listed on the program.

Well, the first magic act was so awful (this was after the dancers sang and did their feather crap while singing about Blackpool). I sat through that. Then the second magic act began with a pair of dolts doing horrible magic and I left the theater. I discovered a good portion of the audience already outside the theater in the Winter Gardens lobby, and there was a tidal wave of people leaving constantly.

What an awful way to end a FISM. Unbelievable.

If this week's fiasco of awful gala show after awful gala show, and poor organization from top to bottom, can't shake Derek Lever's hold on power in the Blackpool Magician's Club, I don't know what can. He needs to GO.

Derek Lever IS Blackpool Magician's Club - They're effectively funded entirely by the convention(s) and from a combination of personal experience and speaking to other performers there's a complex web of companies, bookers, agents and procedures that control the convention and all seem to lead back to Derek...

Is there any truth to the rumor that Derek Lever tried to book Mundaka for one of the gala shows, but he turned him down because he was afraid it would damage his reputation?

What is the response of someone who has the honour of being booed off a FISM gala show ... simply blame the audience.

Dave Allen: "Ok well that didn't go very well the international audience just didn't get our act. Guess its just English humour."

No.

It was simply puerile and sub-standard - no matter what language you speak.

Rather than blame the audience - perhaps look at the calibre of your performance and make the decision to improve from there.

I will add to the Thanks Yous to Craig for his reviews. They were insightful and to the point.
I know the time it take and in the midst of such a busy whirlwind of a convention it must be doubly difficult to find the time to do this.
Thank you again most sincerely.

Brendan - that is the same Dave Allen. Would you book a birthday party magician for the FISM Closing Gala Show ?

Derek Lever did. And we saw the results.

To be fair Dave is one of the top kids entertainers in the UK. LIke seriously good.

I've seen him perform for adult audiences before with mediocre results. One time at an Irish Convention (which I wasn't producing) he over ran on the Gala by 20 minutes much to the annoyance of Dania who was costumed up and standing around waiting to follow him.

Exactly. He may be a superb a children's magician. But was this a 6 year old birthday party? Unfortunately Dave & Carl ( and the person booking them ) weren't able to discern the difference.

Do you honestly think that it was fair to pay 500 to watch that crap? This was my first fism and I was totally ashamed. The show was a horror scene from a butlins holiday camp. Mind you, horses for courses and all that. Derek lever should hang his head in shame and offer an apology. What a tosser.

FISM 2012 would only have been 3 hour drive away for me - however the venue was Blackpool which made it a big no-no for me.
Might think about going to Rimini though...

Cheers

From the FISM page - www.facebook.com/fismpage :
Please remember that FISM Blackpool was produced solely by the local organising society headed by Mr Derek Lever. The FISM Presidium and Executive Committee had no control whatsoever over any production aspects outside of the contest. Please address any comments you may have in this respect to d.lever1@sky.com

A post that read something like ...

"Please remember it was The FISM Presidium that voted for Blackpool led by Derek Lever to host the WCM"

... just disappeared from this thread. How odd.

I thought it was quite a whitty retort.

I don't understand why it was totally under "local:" control. This is what used to be done with the IBM and SAM national conventions. They found the lack of consistency in the abilities of local clubs to handle the needs of such a major convention varied greatly. This is why both groups went to a National committee.
Having said that Blackpool has good reputation for putting on a good convention. I don't know what happened in this case. I wasn't there so I can only judge by the comments made on these forums.
FISM, itself, must bear some responsibility for the convention as it selected the site and gave control locally. It sounds like they are trying to pass the buck in this csse. Hopefully, they will learn from this and exercise more control in the future.
