Portrait of a Bookstore as an Old Man

Discussions of new films, books, television shows, and media indirectly related to magic and magicians. For example, there may be a book on mnemonics or theatrical technique we should know or at least know about.

Portrait of a Bookstore as an Old Man

Postby Edward Pungot » December 1st, 2011, 11:26 am

I stumbled upon this documentary simply by following my curiosity. The result, a surprise cameo of Mr. Mysto aka John Carney in a famous bookstore in Paris (looking for some bargain magic finds no less). Interesting documentary as well on the Shakespeare & Company. As a prologue to the 52-minute doc. here is a recent short done by Spike Jonze along with Le-Tan and Simon Cahn shot on location in the bookstore, followed by the link to the documentary. Enjoy! :)

Thanks, both of those were quite interesting. But I only saw about 5 seconds of Carney in passing. Was there more?

I think he was just bumming for a free place to stay with his Secrets Part II Manuscript :P

No, that was it. But it sure was a surprise kicker when I saw his signature smirking smile on there peering behind the closed door.

Curiouser and curiouser! Cried Alice

Here's another short by Spike Jonze that features yet another magician cameo. I think it's only a "[professional] actor impersonating a[n] [amateur] magician" in this case, but this time he does do magic. Nothing really exciting, just tipping his hat to the wonder workers.
The scene includes use of a flash pan among other things.
