Frank Lane?

Postby Tom Stone » October 6th, 2011, 12:34 pm

This is a somewhat desperate attempt to find anyone who might know anything about Frank Lane.

Specifically, I'm looking for anyone who know if there might be any living friends or relatives to him.

Any clue or hint would be most welcome.

Any clue, hint, rumour etc. would be most welcome, no matter how insignificant it might seem.

Don't know if this is same person, but the in 1970's, I remember a Frank, (or Ralph?) Lane, who had a small magic store and "magic museum",
on Hollywood Blvd., in Hollywood. It was across the street from Joe Berg's store, and also on the 2nd floor. Both the store and museum were unimpressive makeshift affairs.

I remember in his performing/publicity photos, he tried to look like Clark Cable. I heard from an unreliable source his (ex?) wife later worked as a cashier at the now-gone Howard Johnson's on Hollywood and Vine.

Frank Lane was born 1896, so if it was the same person, he would have been 70-80 years old then. Does that agree with your memory?

It's possible he would have fit in that age range, but can't say/guess for sure. I went to his store/museum only once and didn't see him again

I just came from The Magic Castle Swap Meet in Hollywood and asked 2 long-time knowledgible Southern California magicians who are of the opinion/recollection that it was a RALPH Lane, not Frank Lane, who had the magic store/museum in Hollywood. One of them was of the opinion it couldn't be the Frank Lane of Boston, who wrote a book.

If it is Frank Lane from Boston (which does sound right for some reason), Ray Goulet may be the best source to check with.

This is from the NEW TOPS, August 1987, p. 44:

"Frank Lane passed away June 18, 1987 following a massive stroke on May 21st. His widow, Frances Caldwell, passed this information
along in correspondence with Ralph White. Frank had been in a nursing home after suffer ing a smaller stroke about a year ago. Frank Lane was a fine magician and magical inventor, a magic dealer and an author. In his final days he suffered no pain and
left his remains to the Harvard Medical School."

Whaley's WHO'S WHO IN MAGIC gives his real name as Morand Francis Caldwell.

Perhaps these are leads that can be followed. Good luck!

Richard

Thanks!
I came to the same conclusion as you, and emailed Ray Goulet 10 days ago (via the email address on his web page). No reply yet though.
