HBO pilot - magicians in WWII go after the bad guy

Discussions of new films, books, television shows, and media indirectly related to magic and magicians. For example, there may be a book on mnemonics or theatrical technique we should know or at least know about.

Any news on Hobgoblin?

The basic plot idea sounds like fun.

Since March HBO's been working on a WWII with magicians show.

as a digression - Neil Stephenson (remember Anathem?) has a new book which appears to be about gold farming due out in September. Different kind of magical world there - PC gaming - but who knows what plotlines might have uses in our magic?

This reminds me of the controversial book by David Fisher, The War Magician which told the "tale" of the exploits of Jasper Maskelyne and his magic gang in WWII. I thought it was a good read though I can't comment on its accuracy.

Here's Richard Stokes' great website debunking the Maskelyne version of his wartime activities, which may have killed some of the planned projects (I think Tom Cruise optioned a screenplay at one point). Stokes gave a great talk about this at an LA Conference a few years ago. I thought his research was going to be featured in GENII at some point. Hope so!

This project is intentionally fictional as was Inglorious Basterds.

If you'd like to read some about the real sneaky stuff happening in WWII - some made it into Stephenson's book Cryptonomicon - regarding how they moved information around. :) Shhhh it's a secret.
