Although Joshua had provided me with a great deal of advance information earlier, I received my finished copy of Quinns Word To Your Mother book test on Monday and have now had a chance to review it in detail. While the origins of the several methods employed can be traced to the 1930s and are well known to working mentalists, Quinns adaptations and advancements (which he explored and described in his popular book Paralies) take them to a whole new level with the result that Word To Your Mother may well have set a new standard to which future book tests will be compared.
The book, which is beautifully produced and offered in both paperback and hardcover editions with several different titles and cover/dustjacket designs from which to choose (the text in all of them is the same), is handed to a spectator who is invited to open the book at random and mentally select any word (actually ALMOST any word although the limiting parameters are so natural and plausible that the impression is that ANY word could have been chosen), then close the book and put it aside. The performer does not handle, touch, see or go near the book again. The spectator is then asked to mentally choose any letter in the selected word. This is a totally free choice and an completely internal process the spectator says nothing and writes nothing down. Without fishing or asking any questions the performer is able to reveal not only the identity of the chosen letter but its approximate position in the word as well as other letters in the word and, finally, the word itself.
For a second revelation, using either the same audience member or another, the participating spectator opens the book to any page at random and reads to him or herself until they come to a long, substantial word but, rather than the performer revealing the word, the spectator is asked to use it as the springboard for a series of free associations to come up with a totally new word of their choosing not from the book. That process is repeated several times until the spectator is thinking of a completely random word that was not read in a book, was never spoken or written down, and that now exists only in his or her mind and the performer reveals the word!
While not designed or intended to be read from cover to cover, the book will withstand much more than a cursory examination so can safely be left in the hands of the audience for extended periods with little likelihood that the method will be detected something I consider to be important.
Considering the quality the cost is quite reasonable with the paperback version at $120 and the hardcover version at $145 respectively and a slightly different mini-edition (including an ungaffed duplicate) is offered at $60. Discounts are offered for multiple copies/versions and custom versions can also be created by special arrangement.
In the right hands Word To Your Mother approaches true miracle status; however, because the subtleties involved require the quick thinking and audience management skills of an EXPERIENCED MENTALIST it is definitely NOT for the novice or newcomer to the art.
