"Those arrested included Jesus Torivio, 77, the alleged "tosser" who manipulated the shells"
I think we should encourage the Castle to book this guy to lecture!

Note the last name of the Lt. quoted in the article :)

Also, watch the video, it's not bad. Looks more like thimble rigging than a 3 "shell" game?

"I think we should encourage the Castle to book this guy to lecture!" Hmm, that's not a half bad idea!

Twenty years ago it was possible to go to downtown LA on any given Sunday and watch Broad Tossers and three shell operators doing their thing. They used bottle caps for shells and worked on a piece of newspaper. The evidence could be disposed of in a flash, but I never saw any rousted by the cops.

It never took more than five or ten minutes to find workers on the street.

I remember walking into a small magic shop on Hollywood Blvd running into Lou Lancaster. Lou was in a mood and got to talking about Three Card Monte. He started showing me variations and for about 40 minutes went through more versions of Monte than I knew existed including doing a switch with a licked stamp on the card.

Jay Ose was quite good at Monte and had a nice routine worked out that he did at the Magic Castle in the early days. He had a nice way of doing the bent corner where the spectator thought he'd caught him out but Jay just picked up the card and made said something to the effect of "Mmmm, how did this corner get bent?" as he straighted it out. He would then reveal that it wasn't the card that it was supposed to be.

The way he did it allowed everyone in on the joke and didn't make any particular individual into a sucker. Jay's presentation made it a charming effect.

Someone familiar with his full presentation should write it up as it was quite commercial.

The Scoundrels Touch 3 Shell Game Vol 2 has a video of a guy working a festival. Pure joy to watch.
