You had to be there -- or stay up late.

Streetofcards.tv has been posting some great live feeds lately, including recent Las Vegas performances by Eugene Burger, Sophie Evans, and others from Jeff McBride's underground, Gary Darwin's magic club, etc. beginning at 10:00 or so (that's 1:00 am Indiana time!). Last night they topped all prev efforts with a live lecture/performance by John Calvert (to an audience at the Darwin magic club that included the likes of Johnny Thompson, Jeff McBride, Norm Nielsen, etc.). Calvert was spectacular. He's 97 now and had driven 800 miles yesterday before the lecture, en route from a show in Kentucky a few days before. Just great and charming talking to the audience (get a sponsor, he says; Coca Cola has been sponsoring him on round the world tours since 1957), then performing stuff such as cigarette productions, nest of boxes, one-man spirit cabinet, sightless vision, and more. He was funny, charming, smooth, mysterious, and so on as the routines called for him to be, and just excellent at audience control. I finally drifted off to bed at 3 am, and he was still going strong. Thanks, streetofcards, for the privilege of seeing this.

Mr Calvert is proof positive that just because you have to get older you do not have to get old.
