If narrowing it down to 1, I would have to say Halo Aces. But there are oh so many I could name.

That's a tough one - especially for someone from NYC to answer. Those of us who visited Tannen's on Saturdays and then the Governor->Dosanko's->Reuben's afterwords for a Saturday afternoon of magic got to see hundreds of items as he was working on them or writing them up... and then there was all the material he'd bring in from contributors to his magazine Apocalypse which he'd have learned and sometimes ask about the provenance of an item.

So how about a favorite hundred or so just to be realistic? :)

The Indicator (The original Deck-Sterity version as I like the "thinking" required).

I agree - i use the original Indicator a lot.

HaLo Aces Again (I think that's the name).

A perfect, direct, ace cutting. The only trick I do that repeats the same secret move more than once, there's nothing to see and it looks exactly like what you claim to do.

Yes, it's either HaLo Aces or HaLo Again (both are killers). Of course most all items I've written up over the years were favorites at one time or another. Interesting. Just recently I've been doing my Sloppy Card Trick - hadn't performed it for a long while - and it blows people away - including magicians. HL

I think that ONE of my favorites is MATED - page 175 of "Close Up Card Magic".

(My friend Peter Marshall suggested that when the face up cards are placed on the table they are put in an "11 o'clock - 5 o'clock" position and when the cards are found they are put, one to the right of the 11 o'clock and the other to the left of the 5 o'clock. That way the match will either be horizontal or vertical and it won't matter which card is inserted first.)

Jerry: In a book right after CUCM, I taught exactly that for Mated, or a different "matching" effect. I teach it on page 130 of THE CLASSIC COLLECTION. Best - HARRY L.

I regularly perform modified versions of "Lorayne's Poker Deal # 2" and "Estimation Aces" from volume 4 of the "Best Ever Teacher" VHS series.

These both get VERY strong reactions for me.

Just a question out of curiosity Mr Lorayne, there were a few omissions in Classic Collection Volume 1, although we got new tricks as well, what are your reasons for leaving out these particular tricks and will there be omissions and new tricks in Classic Collection Volume 2? Thanks.

I took a poll of many magician friends who'd read and used the original books for decades. Since I was pressed for space, the poll was - which effects/routines did you NEVER use? Well, none were NEVER used, but just a couple were rarely used - so I didn't include them. Yes, there will be one or two omitted from Volume 2; same space problem, same reasoning. Or, one or two that just don't work now. For example, there's a wonderful chewing gum routine in the original of AFTERTHOUGHTS, but - sticks of gum are packaged a bit differently now, so it just doesn't "scan" anymore. Yes, there will be many new ideas in the text itself, and in my "Afterthoughts." HL

That chewing gum trick was Tim Wenk's as I remember--and it was very good. Harry: no sticks of gum come in foil wrappers any more?

I'm sorry (Mr. Lorayne), I inadvertently misnamed the first effect...it should read "Fourtitude" instead of "Foursome". Thank you.

Yes, Richard, it is Tim Wenk's routine with a stick of gum. I checked two or three major brands, and they are packaged differently now. For example, each stick in the package is wrapped in foil but not in the outside paper wrapping of the "good old days." Best - HARRY L.

(Unfortunately, things like this do change. Example: In my book, THE MAGIC BOOK, I teach the straw-through-potato effect. It was one of those things [like Knife Through Coat] where you REALLY do what you say you're doing. And it worked with the drinking straws of that time - PAPER. I used to perform the silly thing often. But now drinking straws are plastic, and - IT NO LONGER WORKS.)

Favorite Lorayne trick?

That's easy. Stabbed in the Pack, in DeckSterity, I believe. I have done it hundreds of times.

I developed a gaffed version. I discarded it because the original handling just works!

I thought twice before re-writing/including Stabbed In The Pack for LORAYNE, THE CLASSIC COLLECTION, Vol. 1 (in the Deck-Sterity section). That'w because it isn't an easy thing to do correctly. I see now that many use it - they just keep it to themselves. I'm glad I included it - It's a "killer." hl

The other day, a magic fan of mine wanted to show me how well he did my Stabbed In The Pack. What he did was the Johnny Benzais estimation version. Johnny had asked my permission to put it in his book (all those years ago). He thought I was using estimation. I WAS, AND AM, NOT. My original version is NOT an estimation effect - the card you toss into the tabled deck is shown to be RIGHT NEXT to the selected or thought-of card. HARRY LORAYNE.
