Was that for real? Because it sure looked real.

That looks like part of a show I originally saw on the Independent Film Channel (I think) a few years back. My impression is that it was an hour-long special done in the UK.

Obviously it's been syndicated to the Middle East.

The first guy gets the award for the worst spectator of all time. Perhaps the money on the table introduced unfortunate pressure.

When I did this "for the money," I always won and always got paid, but I took a different approach. I would say the whole thing was a scam and a trick, and the player was going to lose -- but if he paid attention he'd see what I did and make money for himself "tomorrow night."

Of course, this never happened.

There's some context missing here. Earlier in the TV special, Ricky had explained what scams were, as part of an interview about his roles in Mamet films. Later, they show you the clip, preceded with a title card that refers to the earlier discussion about scams. Something about a "well-played drama."

I also remember some other tricks he did in the special that were completely different in tone.

Ricky Jay had no editorial control over the documentary, which does not show him returning the money a moment later (after letting the victims squirm for a moment!). Was Mr. Jay angry or merely acting? Only he knows for sure, but his services as an actor are in demand by top Hollywood directors, so it is a fair bet that he could convincingly play this part if he chose to... I would compare it with his role in Mamet's superb HOUSE OF GAMES...
