Which Marketing Course?

Post topics about the business side of magic.

From reading various forums the short list of marketing 'books/courses' appear to be:

* "Secrets of a Millionaire Magician" by Randy Charach

*"Ultimate Insider Secrets, Marketing Program For Magicians - Millennium Edition" by Dave Dee

*"The Magician's Emergency Toolkit" by Millard Grubb

While I take the point that I should get all three in time, which one would you recommend that I go for first?

Kindest regards

Less expensive than the others, cover the same ground more efficiently.

Totaly agree with Jeff, CJ's book is packed with great ideas at a reasonable price.

Another that you should seriously consider
and one I would rank far better than two of those mentioned in your short list, is Success in Magic by Jim Snack. Rave reviews.

Modesty doesn't prevent my mentioning my own small contribution to field, MagicCoach 100. Details of this ebook and Jim's book available here.

For the aggresive marketers...check out Hustle Hustle by Bauer and his new book with Mark Levy...How to persuade people who don't want to be persuaded. You can find it in the business section of your local borders or barnes and noble. Killer advice and techniques in those books. Not just for magic but for life!

In one of Jeff Busbys more lucid moments he reviewed the Hustle Hustle book as a fairly disturbing book as it had the ability to get even a very poor performer lots of work. (I'm paraphrasing as my complete Thaumaturgist files are in safe storage).

David, I haven't seen the new Bauer book yet. Is it true he tips the working of some fairly classic mentalism effects?

Timothy,
Bauer does tip some stuff in the book but I wouldn't call it mentalism. A lot of what he tips is what we would call "Body Magic" and also some bits of magic you would find in kid's books. If I remember correctly he does expose the Hoy Book Test and a method for guessing how many fingers people are holding up behind his back but that is the extent of "mentalism" you would find. The cool part is that it doesn't come across as mentalism, but rather as a method for selling yourself and creating leads/relationships in a business sense. The strength of the book lies in how he uses magical techniques to get his message across. It is essential reading for those planning on magic marketing and I would venture to say this is the book to pick up before you pick up the "courses". It will teach you great sales technique and most importantly, make you think about how magic can work for you not only in marketing but in life as well.

As for Hustle Hustle...great book but you need GUTS to do that stuff he recommends. It will give you fantastic ideas but may not be for everybody. -David

Poor old David Hoy.

It looks like it's OK to whack his bold and subtle secrets in any business/management/self help book. David Ben did the same with the Tossed Out Deck in Advantage Play published for the same market.

David, I have the Hustle book. A bit dated now, but it's certainly got some great insights.
