Stage illusion where a female assistant is fired from a cannon (actually not) and appear in a box hanging from the ceiling was performed in 1888 or 1889 by Ten-ichi in Japan.

I wonder whether or not he first performed or invented this illusion. I know Chung Ling Soo did it around 1905 in England, but have failed to find any other magician prior to him.

I am most grateful for any information on this in advance.
