Interesting new magic-related fiction

Postby Dave Shepherd » August 17th, 2001, 5:05 pm

I just heard an interesting interview with author Michael Chabon on NPR's Fresh Air program. He was discussing his book "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay." It's a novel (partly) about a stage escape artist in the 1930s who creates a super-hero comic book hero with many Houdini-like qualities.

I just read an excerpt on the author's web site and it looks extremely neat! Apart from being set in a German-speaking city (Prague), the snippet contains glancing references to all kinds of arcane sleights and such. (For me that's two levels of inside jokes!)

To check it out, go to home.earthlink.net/~mchabon and click on "The Amazing Cavalieri, Escape Artist."

Apparently the book's been out for awhile in hardback and is being released now in paperback. I plan to go buy a copy this evening.

Just got the book.

It says on the cover that it won something called the Pulitzer Prize.

As best as I can determine, that's something like the FISM Grand Prix or the IBM Gold Cups, but for books.

Just picked up the new Glen David Gold's novel called "Carter Beats the Devil." Great dust jacket. It's a wildly fictionalized life story of traveling magic showman Charles Carte. A good read so far and lots of fun magic references.

Hi there,
I also am reading the Carter book right now.
A very tantalizing story so far.
Reminds me sometimes of a book called Boys Life by Robert MacGammon, wich is absolutely magical to someone who's not from the States as I am. (From Holland).
Am also a big fan of Neil Gaiman who's Sandman graphic novels stand side by side with my copies of Minch,Tamariz, Burger and Close.
Anyone ever read those?

I just finished James Swain's novel "The man who walked through walls".

Pretty good read.
About a nephew of Houdini, that uses his magical skills to help save his kidnapped daughter.

I'll have to get his new book "Grift Sense".

I also enjoyed "Grift Sense" but I have just one question. How does one place a bet at the craps table on a HARD SEVEN?
