Postby Steve Hook » September 27th, 2003, 11:11 pm

Has anyone seen this show yet? Can you recommend it? I know Steve Dacri has a good reputation, just wondering about the venue and production.

Thanks,

I'm going to be in Vegas in a few weeks - where is Steve Darci playing? I would love to see him!

Any other less publicized performers in Vegas I should see?

Jeff

Thanks Steve....I honestly never heard of a casino named Sazio's. That amazes me since we are producing gaming supplies in real life. I will hop in the car and have a look tonight. You are never to old to learn something new.......
However at ticket prices starting at $42 going to $80+ I am not sure if I will go and see the show........That seems steep for close-up.......

Sazio is the Italian Restaurant in the Orleans Casino. That's the flagship casino of the "coast" casino group(e.g. Gold Coast, Barbary Coast, Suncoast). It is west of the Las Vegas Strip on Tropicana.

I have been told that "Michaels" in the Barbary Coast is THE BEST restaurant in Las Vegas. (So named after owner Michael Gaughan... who's son Brendan, is leading the Craftsman Truck NASCAR Racing series points... and was 2002 Winston West driving champion.

A great family... and onwers of at least 8 Casino's in Las Vegas, plus a Riverboat in St. Louis. :D

Thanks Oliver, I know the Orleans very well as they are buying from me, however I have not tried Sazios yet and couldn't bring that name in connection. There is just to many choices here in Vegas and I prefer a good steak, so its of to Blackstone's, Alan Alberts or Ruth Chris. Maybe I should try Sazios......................
The owners of teh Orleans are well known here in Vegas and they are recently making the local press because of their plans to built the to date largest locals casino out at the Blue Diamond Area....
Still I feel that the prices for the Close Up Show are pretty steep, any thoughts or am I just to cheap....?

I agree Wolfgang. The price does seem a bit steep. I also find it interesting that there are 5 different seating prices - for a close-up show??

I have every night scheduled with some show, except Monday night. So, I might take chance and try it. That is if Monday Night Football doesn't win out! :p

I am sorry I have witnessed Steve's Show and Lecture ... I am not bad mouthing I am stating my opinion. Plus I found an interview or something on the net that Steve wrote or commented poorly and unfairly on a convention that hired him ... yet he still had to bad mouth them. After seeing his show and lecture ... well the part I didn't fall asleep during ... I have to say the prices are very steep ... not worth the money. Unless for some reason he was holding back his good stuff ... which means he robbed the convention for their money.
Of course my opinion

I looked around on the internet and found this REVIEW

I also found THIS on the Orleans website. Check out the entree names...they are pretty funny... Steve should be happy they didn't name a ham steak after him...

I would still have a hard time spending $59.95 for dinner and a show for closeup magic...but then again I am spoiled and get to see some of the best folks in the field perform all the time.

Having been to his lecture in a midwest city, all I can say is that I wouldn't spend the money there, but go see Mac King instead.

Steve is a really nice guy, but Mac has a MUCH better show.

BEST value in Vegas!

I saw the Mac King show in Vegas.
Some woman or other on the front door let me in free.
He seemed very professional. The crowd certainly loved him and the general impression I got is that he is considered to be the best show in Vegas.
Of course I just sat there looking grumpy. That is what happens if you let people in for nothing.

Ah, a "Grumpy" magician...

Amazingly, I have seen MANY "Grumpy magicians" sit with their arms crossed, starring at Las Vegas performers with little daggers SHOOTING out of their eyes...

We call that "JEALOUSY".

They often sit with their arms crossed, watching and thinking "How in the Hell did this Schmuck get to perform here?"
"I could do SO MUCH BETTER with MY show..."
or,
They sit and take mental (and sometimes ACTUAL) Notes - bits of business, presentations, even complete tricks they feel THEY could do "back home". (And maybe even get into a showroom in
Vegas with!)

To make this even more of an insult - it is generally the "magicians" who get "COMPED" (FREE admission) who sit and do this!?!

Why?

Amazing, just amazing to me... (and they wonder why they never seem to get "that big break" they have looked for most of their lives...)

"Karma"
;)

Tiny
PS And a note to "those Grumpy, Comped Magicians"... Many of us Las Vegas Performers are used to the stage lighting, we CAN see you sitting in the audience!
(and WE are laughing ["all the way to the bank"] at you!)
:D

Oh, I wasn't grumpy because of Mac King.
I was grumpy because I found Vegas so boring. As a man of the cloth I do not approve of gambling and all I could see was pretentious hotels full of pretentious attractions and silly slot machines.

I much prefer Blackpool in England. It is just like Vegas but far more seedy and tawdry, More my style and less boring. Loads of drunks spewing in the streets to liven things up.Nothing like that in Vegas.

Vegas was so boring I thought I was back in Canada. Canada is so boring that even the female impersonators are women.

Also the place is bad on the feet. I only consented to see Mac King because I was tired walking around. At least Blackpool has a good bus service.

I have no problem with Mac King. His 2 year daughter is something else though. I have some awful memory of her drawing a pumpkin on my bald head. I won't get into it now.

I will simply say that bald heads are not made for that sort of thing.

No.My grumpiness has nothing to do with a comped magician being jealous. It is simply to do with a comped magician being Mark Lewis.

I did see a hypnotist there. That was a comped show too. I think there were more hypnotists in the audience than there were people. I don't think the hypnotists were particularly grumpy though. They seemed to be full of smiles whether genuine or not I have no idea. I just sat there looking grumpy as usual.

The fellow was quite good though. Mind you he had the same name as me so that was no doubt why.
Dr Scott Lewis. He is worth a visit if he is still there. You may even be in the audience when there are no hypnotists there. I did not make myself known to the other hypnotists. I am far too anti social for that sort of thing.

I see that Tiny is bubbling away about how we should talk about Steve Dacri rather than Mac King.

Don't blame me. I am innocence personified as usual. Blame Lee Darrow! He was the one who changed the discussion to Mac King. All I know about Mac King is that I ended up at his house a year ago and am not quite sure how I got there. I don't think anyone noticed me though.

I did not see Steve Dacri. No Comp tickets. Mind you it was a year ago so I don't think he had arrived yet. I did see a few incompetents at Caesar's Palace though. Since I am known for my tact and discretion I will not say who they were.

No. Tiny I was not "jealous" of them. I don't think they were getting much money anyway. I expect they are all working for Geno now.

Psychic;
It's to bad you can not see what we see - it is jealousy - you just can not see it yet. Maybe someday, it will all come clear to you...

Have you ever performed at Ceasers?
Do you know what they actually made $$$ wise?
Have you worked for Geno?

Have you performed anywhere in Vegas?

(Could I get a comp?)
heehee

...I thought not.

Steve's Show is in a casino pub and the room does not lend it's self to being a very good "showroom" - but, he is still working!

1- Why with his attitude did he go to Las Vegas ?
2- Why would anyone comp him a ticket ?Once again you are doing a good job Tiny, keep up the good work.

Oh, dearie me, dearie me!
What on earth is Tiny bubbling about?
Of course I have performed at Caesars. In the mall, mind you. I was on a training mission for one day. No time to explain.

I may have many faults but jealousy is not one of them. I cannot spend other people's money so I honestly don't give a stuff what they make. Or where they work. I can assure you I have plenty of my own money anyway. I am a very good thief.

My friends will tell you that I do not have a jealous nature. When you are already one of the greatest magicians the world has ever known then naturally there is nothing to be jealous about.

I do know EXACTLY what some of the acts make at Caesar.I have seen the books. I have already informed you that I am one of the high flyers of corporate America.
I did not like Caesars Magical Empire anyway. Bloody awful place and I am glad it has closed down.Too much waiting about between shows looking at some bloody silly fountain. The only distraction from this was various starving magicians wandering about the place performing.

Have I performed anywhere in Vegas?

Before I answer that I must say that I am not impressed just because people perform in Vegas. I know as well as you do that it is no big deal anyway. Only people from outside Vegas think it is.

No. I have not performed in Vegas. I wish I had been. I was bored out of my mind with the place.
However, you will certainly see me performing there in the future. Again and again and again.
You will not need a comp. Look and you will see. I never charge people to watch me. I am truly a person of much munificence.

I will not say when and I will not say where. You will find out faster than greased lightning.

I have not said one bad word about either Mac King or Steve Dacri on this thread so I have no idea why you are implying that I have.

No. I have not worked for Geno. I am far too important for that sort of thing. However, I did offer to do it for nothing. I was so bored in Vegas that I called him and told him I would do it for free. He never called back. Naturally I have no idea why.

I think Geno does a very good service for all the starving magicians in Vegas. If it weren't for Geno they would all be homeless. He gives them employment and I hear he is a very good boss much beloved by his staff. Well, that is what one of them told me anyway. Of course he may have been a relative.

I shall be sure to come and watch you next time I am in Vegas. Just look for the grumpiest guy in the audience with his arms folded and the tape recorder by his side. I have to use the tape recorder since I cannot take notes with my arms folded.

Rennie. Please speak in a socially acceptable manner. The word "dude" is most unwelcome in polite society. It is an Americanism used by lower class people.
I am sure that you can aspire to higher standards than that.
And please straighten out your spelling. Please note that there is a letter "h" in the word straighten.
Of course you live in California and naturally this may explain things. I have heard about the education system there.
Tiny is NOT doing a good job in dealing with me. I am Mark Lewis after all and am of a very high intellectual calibre and therefore cannot be outwitted.

Anyway if you stop getting excited and pay attention you may learn something from me.

I am warning Mr. Venettie to be quiet.
My exchanges with Tiny and everyone else are tongue in cheek banter and not to be taken seriously.

My argument with you goes very deep and is not a
suitable matter for discussion on here. There is considerable animosity between us which as you well know has resulted in legal action in the Irish courts.

My relationship with you is extremely venomous and I can assure you that the matter is certainly not at an end. I have a long memory.

I suspect that the only reason you have joined this forum is because I am here. Stay away from me.

Talk to other people about other things. Do not try to involve the people here in our private war.
I will not be responding to you on this forum any further. I suggest you do not try to provoke me.

Keep well away.

Psychic,
Since you seem to prey on my spelling errors, which by the way was a typo, I would like to correct your mistake's,
1 -You said,"The first thing you must realise is that I am an expert fisherman".The word realize is spelled with a "Z"
2 - Your response to the long running feud you are having with John Venetti stated " I am warning Mr Venettie to be quiet "and you can see very clearly his name does not end in "E".
Not trying to pick an argument, I am just wondering why you have this bad attitude toward entertainers in Las Vegas.
I have been communicating with Tiny for a while now and having never met him personally I consider him a good friend and all around GOOD guy.

Rennie, my boy.
Do pay attention.
The correct spelling is the British way. With the letter "S" NOT the letter "Z".
You are speaking the ENGLISH language not the American one so please do so in the proper manner.

I do not have a bad attitude to Vegas entertainers. I don't recall seeing any.

I did mention seeing Mac King and I have already said that he seemed to be very professional and funny and the audience loved him. Other people made derogatory remarks concerning Steve Dacri. Not me.

Rennie;
My dear friend, we have to stop pushing Psychic's buttons...

He is getting greener with jealousy...

(at least thats what we shall call his childish banterings - lets give him the benefit of the doubt...)

Psychic's reputation here (and obviously other places) is just that. I don't think we need to lower our selves to this fellows idea of "entertainment" - Those who watch us from the outside, tend to react this way...

(Has anyone noticed my tounge placed firmly in my cheek?)
:D

Now, back to this thread.

I throw out this question to one and all...

It seems like after Siegfried & Roy hit town many years ago, the strip slowly filled with "Tiger Magic Acts". Do you think now that Steve Darci's Show has opened, we will see a flood of "close-up Magic Shows" popping up everywhere?

Hi Tiny,
I agree, let's move on as this is becoming a verbal volleyball match.
Close-up magic is actually my favorite and would like to see more, unfortunately the rooms they would have to be held in do not accomodate very many people. So would they survive economically without as many people as a theater can accomodate that is the question ?
I have seen close-up performed in a large room and viewed on large screens, but does not seem like you are up close. I don't know, just my opinions lets hear more.
Thank you Tiny for changing the subject back where it belongs.

I was wondering when you two would get it. Im glad you did. The more you learn about Mark, the more you will learn what to ignore (he often tells you what to ignore and then simply takes advantage of you when you do not). I have to admit that I have a bizarre fascination with him (I look forward to meeting him one day): I suppose hes sort of like the Howard Stern of magic. You either like him or you do not, but one thing is certain; he will not go away!

As for Tinys question: Its an interesting thought, though the closure of Caesars Magical Empire would seem to say otherwise (but please note the use of the word closure and not failure). Perhaps they jumped the gun in doing so.

The November MAGIC has a short piece on the show and it sounds quite good. And while expensive, it is a dinner show so it sounds like a good value. Dacri is a fine performer, so I suspect that my next trip to that land of lunacy will include a visit to the Orleans.

I see that Bubbles has decided to stop babbling. And Rennie appears to have surrendered as well.

Obviously they have lost the argument and have decided to bow out with the most amount of dignity that they can muster. They are trying to save face by chattering in some American phraseology about "pushing buttons"

This is elevator talk that should not be allowed in civilised discourse. Only Americans talk in this incomprehensible manner.

Furthermore only Americans would try to navigate through life with a silly name like Mr. Bubbles.

However, I will confess that the name rings a bell. Among all the incompetents at Caesars Palace I do remember two performances that stood out. One was a very good man and wife act that was quite watchable and even excellent. I cannot remember who it was.
However, there was also a very amusing MC. Very good indeed. Fat fellow.
It is beginning to dawn upon me now that this may have been the Bubbles personage who is trying to irritate me but failing miserably.

I am not sure though. Perhaps he will enlighten me.
