Life Savers, Spirit Theater, Miracles of Takagi, Collect Almanac--ORDER NOW

Postby Richard Kaufman » June 9th, 2007, 12:14 pm

You can order my reprints in advance and save $10 on each one (1985 prices!) here:

http://kaufman.geniimagazine.com/

Note to our foreign customers, we hope to have a new alternative to surface mail posted sometime next week. It will be more expensive than before, but substantially less than DHL air.

Richard, Would it be possible to add a little content to your listings for these books? I would love to see a table of contents and maybe some kind of description like they have on the dust jacket or on the back of a book so we can get a better idea of what we are buying. I know there is great excitement about these reprints, but since I don't know what is actully in them I think this would help the novices out there. Thanks in advance for your time and consideration.
Peace, Joe

Life Savers has a collection of workable effects done with everyday objects. Defined as 'improvised' rather than 'impromptu', there is something for pretty much anyone, splitting spoons in two, creating pulls at the last minute and moving holes around tickets. There are rubber band tricks, coin tricks, ring tricks and even an effect with a crossword.

It is an excellent book, and deserving of its classic status.

Collected Almanac contains a vast array of routines covering the whole spectrum of close up magic. There is magic here that has become part of the history; people probably don't realise that effects such as the Signed Card, Sankey's Airtight, GreenWarp and Ring Band-it all debuted in Almanac.

The Takagi book is typical of the Japanese books of the time - there are new takes on classic routines; the couple of wild card routines, one with business cards, several triumphs, some beautiful rope magic and a wonderful thumb tie - as well as new routines and moves which were new to Western magicians. The cups and balls routine, the coins and saucer and the coin purse moves are well worth looking at, and the book ends with a full linking ring routine.

All three books have material I, and many others, have used for many years. I don't own Spirit Theatre, so I can't comment on that.

Take care, Ian

Ok, I'm a junkie, I admit it. :) I don't know if anyone else had this problem trying to get their mitts on the books. I already own the Collected Works (great btw) but when I began to add the other three to the shopping cart, a problem happened. I added the Miracles and Life Savers - the pre-publication price came up fine. When I added Spirit Theater it came up $50 instead of the pre-pub price. Let me know if this is a case of pilot error on my part (it probably is). Can't wait for New Magic of Japan, 5X5 and Takes It Easy!!! Get going Richard!! :)

Mike, I'll see to your problem. Anyone who orders will only be charged the pre-publication price regardless of what it might say. We process all credit card orders manually--they don't automatically shoot through when you hit "submit." That way we can be sure of all the prices.

I have said it before and will say it again:
"The Collected Almanac" is probably the one book I would want on a desert-island; so much to pore over again and again. (My copies of that newsletter, from when I subscribed years ago, are carefully-stored in the archives, next to my Wenii, but I digress...)

Coincidently, #2 on my list of desert-island books would probably be "Lifesavers". --I will wax-enthusiastic about that book on the old thread which Dustin revived above.

This post is to assure anyone who may (for whatever reason) feel wary about buying either of these books--DON'T!

Lock in the pre-publishing price, and you will thank me later.

P.S. You know that perfect, legendary restaurant you can recommend to anybody coming to town, confidently knowing they will have a great time? (In San Francisco, for examples, try Bix, Sam's Grill, The Slanted Door, and (or) The Fog City Diner...)
Similarly, these books whoop ass, will imrpove your brain, and make you grin repeatedly at the sheer cleverness.

Honestly, I am a SERIOUSLY cynical jerk who has seen a lot of "magic books" lo these 35 years: both of these get my absolute highest recommendation.

I repeat: you will thank me later. :)

Will the reprint of Spirit theatre come with a cd, rather than the record?
( and if not, is it possible to get a cd, since i am scared to play the record, yet want to hear it one day)

Only the first edition of Spirit Theater came with the Eva-Tone Sound Sheet (a sort of flat plastic record). It has already been reprinted without that, and will not come with it this time.
Can't afford to include a CD.
Someone else has posted that the sound clip is available to hear on Eugene's website.

We'll be shipping all books by the end of June. They're expected to be finished at the printer on June 27, and it takes a day or two for them to get shipped over the fulfillment warehouse and get checked in, etc.

All of our reprints will be ready to ship within a week and our new International Economy Service postage rates are in place and functioning in the shopping cart for online ordering.
Books under $50 have a $10 postage charge each.
Books over $50 have a $15 postage charge each.
If you order all four reprints, the total postage would be $45.
All of this postage is calculated strictly on a per pound basis.

There is no more "Surface Mail"--the United States Post Office eliminated it.

There is only airmail.

So, we have turned to the private company who has been doing our overseas mailing for Genii. They have a less expensive service than DHL Air, which is the other option we offer for overseas delivery. The new International Economy service is more expensive than Surface Mail used to be, but less than DHL.

I've seen finished books (just got them before leaving for the SAM in Dallas), so I assume that they are probably in the process of going to the warehouse now. They'll be checked in and shipped shortly.

Hi, Richard -

Do you have an update on the new book on Japanese magic you are writing? Will there be a pre-publication special?

Thanks -

Mark, I am not writing the book. Steve Cohen has translated it from Japanese, and I will be editing and correcting the text and making sure everything is clear and works.

I will publish it, along with reprinting Five Times Five: Japan and New Magic of Japan sometime in the fall, but probably not before the end of October.

Yes, all three books will be available at pre-publication prices, with a special price for the purchase of all three.

Look for ads here on the Genii Forum and in Genii, The Conjurors' Magazine.

Hi Mr. Kaufman,
i ordered the Life Savers reprint book some weeks ago.
I tried in these days to contact the staff via email in order to know if the book was shipped to me in Italy.
Since i chose the courier option i wanted also to know if there was a tracking number,
but mainly i wanted to know if the book has been already sent to me.
