The Bound Genii
Richard: Can you tell us anything more about the reprinting of the early volumes of Genii in bound form? Thanks. Michael

Re: The Bound Genii
Will the publication resemble your reprints of Stanyon's Magic & The Mahatma? Which volumes will be included? Will there be a cumulative index? When do you expect they will be available? Do you have a schedule for reprinting the remaining volumes? Stuff like that.

Re: The Bound Genii
I would love to see the file of Genii put on CD-ROM so that it would be searchable. I know it would be a huge undertaking, but it is possible (The Linking Ring has done so). Although the finished product would probably be costly, it would be priceless from a research point of view. When researching in old magazines I often go page by page through each issue spanning several years to find information. Searchable CD-ROMs save me literally hundreds of hours. If Richard were to put Genii on CD-ROM, Id be the first (and possibly the most grateful) customer. Perhaps it could be issued in installments if putting the whole file out at once was too time consuming.

Re: The Bound Genii
There are problems with the magazines that have been put onto searchable CD roms. The main one being that the text looks lousy on the screen because each entire page of the magazine has been treated like a single image rather than dealing with the text and photos separately. I'm not satisfied with the way any of them look right now.

Re: The Bound Genii
Richard,
I think you addressed all these concerns in another post.
I agree, though, about putting Genii on a CD rom...It shouldn't be done like Linking Ring.
With the bound Genii volume, what volumes were you going to do first? I remember it was some of the earlier ones, yes?

Gee, I wonder if anybody from Lybrary.com has an opinion on the subject? :p

Re: The Bound Genii
If he does, we won't hear it here!
We're thinking about doing the first five or six years in book form. Genii had a much smaller number of pages per month back in 1936, so we could fit quite a few years into one or two books.

OK, Richard, enough talk. When can we place our order for the bound Genii magazines? I've seen the originals - they are an excellent reference!
Re: The Bound Genii
My Genii file begins with the September 1968 issue. Volume 33 - No. 1. That's the issue when Vernon began his column. For me, that makes an ideal time to begin. Earlier than that, I'm not interested. Thanks to my friends on this forum, who helped me to fill in some missing issues!

Re: The Bound Genii
John, are you aware that Vernon and many other members of the Magic Castle contributed lots of material to Genii before "The Vernon Touch" officially started?

Yes, Richard. I had some earlier issues, but have since given them away. I'm sure I'm the exception though. Most folks are probably eagerly awaiting the reprints!

Re: The Bound Genii
John said, in regards to pre-1968 stuff, "I'm not interested."
John, you should go through some of those early issues. There is gold in them.
Then again, I'm one who will spend hours hunched over old volumes of magazines looking for just the right thing. I've skimmed at least ten volumes of Genii at the Castle...not to mention countless loose volumes, as well as the current ones.

Re: The Bound Genii
John, it is precisely because you have a complete post-1968 file that you should want Richard to start with Volume 1, Number 1. There is a wealth a material in the previous 32 years, including much by Vernon. Unfortunately, the earlier issues are becoming harder and harder to find and many of the loose issues have deteriorated due to handling over time. Reprinting the early years would be of great benefit not only to the historian but to all those who love magic.Originally posted by John Blaze:

Okay Richard,
Your friends on the forum have talked me into it. You have my permission to go ahead with the project. I'm green-lighting it for you. But get those Jennings books out first. Hey, unrelated, but curious, Richard: Do you know about a technique, instead of double under cutting, you do a bluff pass type of action, and complete the cut by putting just a single underneath. I think it may have been a Jennings idea.

I might be wrong, because I am not near my books now, but I think that a cut like this is explained in "Marlo without Tears" under the heading "The Real, Honest-To-God Bluff Cut". No idea if there are any further credits concerning its origins.

Woops, sorry. When I saw the subject heading, The Bound Genii, I thought we were talking about a porn movie.

Same thing happened to me on that "Size Doesn't Matter" thread. I'd prepared a thoroughly researched 10-point refutation of the premise, only to find that I'D WASTED MY TIME!

Re: The Bound Genii
While we are posting Genii wishes, I'd love to see Magicana (all of it) in bound form. Actually I have them all in binders at home, and they constitute one of my favorite "books." Lin Searles also used to keep Magicana in a binder. It would be worth it just to hear the screeching from Idaho when you re-publish the Jennings Chop Cup routine.
Re: The Bound Genii
Dear David, and Lisa,
I feel ya. I thought I hit the ultimate porn site at first. Turns out to be magic, which is pretty cool. But what was I to think:
HI, I'M FRENCH
ROMEO AND...
HOW LONG...
CLEAN VERSION OF EVERY INCH A LADY
DEAN'S BOX
DARREN ROMEO OPENS MAY 28
DAVID DEVANT GETS THE BOOT
MY FAVORITE EFFECT PHYSICAL
GET A LOAD
POP UP MOVE! WHO'S IS IT
BRACOS FLOATING BALL
Phew! Anyway, to add some worth to this really silly post, and it IS kind of related, at least to the way the thread has turned out...
Did you know that Annemann used to advertise some of his magic books in "for the public" magazines, with the line "Mailed to you in a plain brown wrapper." The ads would say things like "Ladies, teach HIM a trick or two for a change." Etc. Books of his like SHH! IT'S A SECRET, and 202 METHODS OF FORCING.
There are books today that could have the same effect, and I could list them, but please! Richard is running a magic forum here!
