Best effect you've found from a book (non card)

Postby Guest » April 18th, 2006, 12:46 am

Hello

First time poster here just getting back into magic after a 30 year hiatus.

I posted this at another forum and would like to get the viewpoint from here as well.

What is the best effect that you've found in a book and have used?

Here's the criteria. It has to be practical ie not vanishing the Statue of Liberty and non card (in the sense of a conventional card trick)

Please note the book as well.

I'll get the ball rolling with my two choices

This post isn't all too altruistic. It's a swerve to help an old "never has been" on his road back to magic. :)

The Magic of Michael Ammar - Crazy Man's Handcuffs aka Uncanny Penetrating Rubber Bands from Tarbell 7

While I've never really used one, I was thinking about non-card effects and came up with a magic square. To me this can be presented simply as a math feat or it can be given a different presentation or setup. A friend of mine does a nice routine with one after doing some other mental ability type effects. Anyway, all you need is something to write on and the knowledge of how it works so you can do it really anytime for one or a big crowd. A great intro to this may be found in Harry Loraynes The Magic Book discussed elsewhere in this general beginners area.

Hi: There are more "handling" of magic squares in MATHEMATICAL WIZARDRY. Check 'em out; they're all good, all easily "presentable." HARRY LORAYNE.

On the non card side, open up The Stars of Magic and have a look. Also Ganson's The Dai Vernon Book of Magic. Lots of goodies.

It could be the type of thing where you go whoa...this is too good to be in a book (it should be sold separately) or this one effect is worth the price of the whole book.

Here is what I am looking for.

What is the best effect you've found in a book and used? No card tricks please

What is the name of the effect and what book did it come from?

Dai Vernon's TRIUMPH, Stars of Magic 1946. Still the best version (my opinion).

I stated the idea of magic squares because of the practical nature as you really dont need props. Recently Ive been experimenting with bill switches and re-read the Roger Klause $100 bill switch in Ammars ebook edition of Encore 3 (not sure if it is exactly the same as the original Encore 3). Im not sure if this was the original source for the routine but it has seen other mediums besides print before. In fact Ammars Encore 3 is chock full of great routines and not all of them are cards but the card items are great. You can buy this ebook edition as a download from Michael Ammars website www.ammarmagic.com.

Im anticipating this weekend when I pickup the new Switch book by John Lovick from my friend Eds magic shop. The bill switch could be the perfect routine for you to try out and Im sure there are more than enough things to read in the new Switch book to keep you happy for a long time.

OK, non card... Conrad Haden's double copper and silver from Modern Coin Magic by J.B. Bobo... then when I bought the coins, from Mr. Haden, he taught me the handling.
Stay tooned.

Flutter, a John Kennedy effect, which is and effect with a coin and a napkin. It's great and it's in the Paul Harris AOA series.

Best,
