How to perform for the Dare program

Postby Paul » August 30th, 2001, 10:34 pm

I need to find out what to use at a DARE program that I will be doing in the near future. I have all types of magic but I need to know how to perform at a just say no program.

I think that you'll have to work out your own material for that. It shouldn't be difficult. "Just say no" can be twisted lots of different ways.
Anyone have any ideas?

How about reinforcing the "Just Say No" theme by getting the spectators (kids I assume) to repeat the phrase from time to time. "Just Say No" would be a perfect time to vanish something. Perhaps while displaying a cigarette, shotglass or white crocheted ball (resembling an illegal substance), you have the specs yell "Just Say No", and the item vanishes.

This might sound a little goofy, but how about Metamorphosis. Your are the drug dealer...you bind the "user" (assistant)...put the user into the trunk (you can insert all the lessons to be learned)...assistant does a costume change to police type uniform, and appears while you the dealer are found to be bound.

Hope that's not too corny....just thinking out loud.

Good luck with the show. Please report back to us with details

The best information I've seen about using magic in this sort of format comes from Stan Davis. He's got a small book on using magic to persuade kids not to start smoking.

Go to http://www.magicwithmeaning.com/
and check out the section on the book.

I too, am a policeman. I put together an antidrug show a few years ago. I found a book I can't remember the name, but it was called Stranger Danger, the Magical Say No To Drugs Book, or something like that. It was a little help. I can also recommend some other books if you're interested.

I just remembered another resource for this type of material -- Samuel Patrick Smith's website.
http://www.spsmagic.com/

He specializes in kids' magic, and has the Stan Davis book I mentioned above, as well as other stuff you might find useful.

Tom:

It's an acronym for:
Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.)

D.A.R.E.'s goal is to educate kids about identifying, and hopefully avoiding, drugs. Two of my kids went through that program via North Carolina public school system, but it's a national effort.

They have a somewhat annoyingly busy website at dare.com. Someone discovered elementary Flash and went wild.

The book Mike M is referring to is Drugs, Strangers and Other Dangers by Ron Conley.

I just got a copy and it looks like a good resource and includes his complete Magical Say No Show. Purchase of the book also grants performance rights.

You can get it from SPS Publications, Daytona Magic and other places as well.
Pick a card....Any card....NO not THAT card..THIS one!
