I just saw David Copperfield's latest show, "Portal", at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

I would't want to ruin the surprise for those of you who have yet to see it, but now that it's toured across the States and most of the rest of the world, I would like to gather opinions and thoughts, pro or con.

I caught his show back in March and really enjoyed it. By far, my favorite routine in the current line-up is The Lottery. I saw it back when he did not have the big grand production at the end. It looks like David beat me to a great routine. I work for the US Senate and had been working on a routine for over a year where I would need a prediction chest custom made into a ballot box. I backed off of that idea and decided to do a routine where I use Casino Royale by Larry Becker, along with a winning Keno Ticket with six numbers called out from the audience and have it all on an audio tape. I talked with Larry about utilizing his chest for this effect.

Anyway.............

I noticed an irony of David's current show. He seems to want to get away from the "box" concept of illusions. Such as appearing on a steel plate, a sawing in half without boxes (Laser)...but yet, he is using more trucks to haul all of his equipment. I know you didn't want to give away the production at the end of Lottery (at least from what I have heard) but that alone probably takes up half of a truck. Couple that with the crane for the Portal Disappearance, the apparatus for 13 and the Motorcycle Shadow Box, and that is quite a bit of road cases.

I think his show is pretty good right now. A couple of the routines have sort of a hokey story line, but that has come to be expected. I know there were some that were offended by the Binky the Clown routine, but I thought it was a funny bit. Of course, I am a big fan of Chris Kenner's humor and am happy to see Chris anytime he is on stage. Actually, if I had a vote, I would maybe ditch the Binky routine and let Chris go back to doing 15 minutes of stand-up during the middle of the show.

Just my opinion. Interested in seeing what others thought.

I saw portal way back in February. I loved the show. When I saw it however, there was no "Lottery" effect. The closest thing to what it has been described as was a mentalism effect with sort of a "pick a card" plot, except the cards had ESP symbolls, celebrities, and emotions on them. Is this the effect? Another thing that I noticed was that there wasn't a levitation in the show, and from what I have seen David ussualy keeps a little bit of every kind of effect in his show.
