Jumbo McCombical Deck

Postby Guest » November 15th, 2005, 4:20 pm

I would appreciate it if you would make me aware of any alternate presentation ideas for the jumbo McCombical Deck. Are there published variations, or do people, for the most part, stick with the "standard" presentation (which is, of course, wonderful)?

Many thanks.

Check HERE for info on the David Regal routine in Magical Arts Journal.

Haven't read that issue in a while but I remember that it has a detailed, humorous script.

Bill: Are your notes available for purchase? Other contents? Did you make up a special deck?

You know, that is a good question that has really caught me unprepared for all of the wrong reasons. I have used it so long until I really don't know what has been changed.

It is a killer routine if you are already a funny guy.

I pulled out the issue of MAJ with the David Regal routine. There's a picture of him from back then...heh heh heh. If it didn't say "David Regal" on the picture, you wouldn't know it was him.

Mr. Palmer,

Who is responsible for the telephone book bit we've all stolen to go with Billy's McCombical Deck?

What is the telephone book bit?

The old telephone directory bit is where first you pick two volunteers who are at least a foot difference in height. You bring them on stage and ask them to stand back to back and decide to do something to even things up.

So you take out a thick phone book, stand back and look the situation over, and then get the taller person to stand on the phone book. Of course, the audience sees your mistake. So you correct it. You retrieve the phone book, tear out a page and get the taller person to stand on it again. Go on with the routine. The inequities have been remedied!

It certainly sounds like something Billy would do. Agreed?

I had never seen that bit... and frankly don't see what it does re the McCombical deck as I only use one person for my routine.

I think the best use of that gag is Blackstone Jr.'s. He had a child onstage that needed to be a little taller. Blackstone called offstage for "something for her to stand on..." pause a beat... the assistant walks onstage carrying a page of newspaper! It's the timing that does it! --Mitch Dutton

I use two people. One gets the red deck and the other the blue deck. Both are in their boxes so that differences in the thicknesses of the decks is not evident. (Neither person sees both decks.) Using two people also allows the telephone book bit.

I've never actually used that bit. I probably will at some time in the future, though!

Billy McComb is like that, Nicholas. He is outspoken, but generally very helpful.

Magic lost a lot when we lost Billy McComb. Everyone was better off for just knowing him.

He will certainly be missed.

An extra ending for this trick is to produce a correct card silk before the cards are shown. Of course, the magician blindly ignors that the card on the silk appears to be the wrong one. (Think MisMade Flag when the solid color silk is dropped.)

I don't know. I wasn't aware of the bit until I saw it posted here.

I know that this thread is a few years old.. but I'd really like to track down Regal's McCombical Deck routine. Does anyone have a copy of the MAJ issue, or know where I can get one?

Nevermind.... Ammar has got downloadable ones on his site!!

I understand that a future new problem in getting this effect is the likelihood that Jumbo Bicycles will be discontinued. That will be a loss.

I use jumbo movie cards of all different movies in packet A and a bunch of the same movies in packet B and continue ala the normal McCombical. Audiences can relate much better to movies than they can to a 4 of clubs :) Plus the different movies gives you great fodder for jokes.

I have tons of duplicate movie cards if anyone is interested I can make up a McCombical set for a reasonable price with your choice of force movie(s). I have family themed movies, Rated R movies and horror movies.

PM me if interested.
