I believe it is also in Royal Road to Card Magic - I'll look up the page number later tonight. It is probably also somewhere in the Card College series...

Ron Bauer has a manuscript that includes the slop shuffle. He has two wonderful touches that any magician who uses the move will definitely want to learn.

Pete McCabe is right. Ron Bauer's "Fair & Sloppy" is a great place to learn the Slop Shuffle as well as Marlo's Convincing Control. The routine is quite good as well.

Here are some sources for the slop shuffle

1. Slop Shuffle Roll Over ( Ray Mertz ),Apocalypse II Vol 06 - 10 ( 1983 - 1987 )

2. Sober Slop Shuffle ( Edward Marlo ), The Legandary Hierophant by Jon Racherbaumer

3. Modernized Slop Shuffle, Deck - sterity by Harry Lorayne

4. Slop Shuffle, Daryls Card Revelations Vol. 5 by Daryl Martinez

5. Subtle Slop Shuffle Aces, Magic Magazine by Stan Allen

Anyone who uses the slop shuffle should look into Jay Sankey's "Back in Time" effect (published in several places: Sankey Unleashed, Sankeytized and his L&L DVDs to name a few.)

IMO, this is one of the best card effects of all time.

Doug, I agree, Back in Time is a great effect. I also love "Personal Slop" from Paul Cummins "from a shuffled deck in use" series. One of the best in the hands Triumph effects.

YOU are right on about sankeys take on the slop shuffle Doug.
Giobbi has a beautiful handling in card college 5
which is a table top handling based on a Larry Jennings trick from almanac.
this has a time machine themed presentation combining triumph, ambitious card and a red black seperation.
Henry Evans also has a slop shuffle routine on one of his videos where the deck ends up in suit and numerical seperation. Check it out doug

I agree; Cummins, Evans and Giobbi's routines are all excellent... but (IMO) the simplicity of Sankey's (inthehands/fasdiu) routine is a notch above the rest.

THE real work on the slop shuffle is on the Eddie Tullock trade show DVDs.

A little touch I like to use:

When slop shuffling, allow a few cards to drop to the table (if/when one is available.)

After you've completed the 'mix' pick up the dropped cards and insert them into the pack; face-up cards going into the face-up portion, face-down cards into the face-down section.

The combination of dropping cards and then inserting face-up and face-down cards into the pack really sells the mix.

Is the Greg Wilson variant of Sankey's trick in print?

Ron Bauer has a manuscript with a three-phasse routine, part of which includes the Sid Lorraine invented Slop Shuffle -- but with Bauer's amazing handling.

It has a "back in time" theme.

Doug,

Check out his Pyrotechnic Pasteboards DVD:

http://www.penguinmagic.com/product.php?ID=362

The routine in question is Flashback, great version for a more formal occasion, still prefer Sankey's for a more impromptu nature, do it all the time as my climax to Ambitious Card, with a back in time theme... I have to remember to pause and really sell it when the cards are shown to be back face down, this gets a fantastic reaction, and you almost have to prompt the spectator to turn the card over to reveal the next suprise, excellent routine!

PS. Both of Greg's DVDs are worth it for the performance sections alone, two of the best I own for pure entertainment...

Sorry Mr. Conn, that I'm to late but I see you got all the information. I'm interesting to know the output if you see the G. Wilson variation. I'm sure that it would be an outstanding effect.

Here are three more Slop shuffle References:

The James File pp. 1806-1807 edited by Allan Slaight.

Expert Card Technique by Hugard & Braue. "Separating The Colors" pp. 115-116.

"A Drunken False Shuffle" in Jerry Andrus's ANDRUS DEALS YOU IN pp.91-93. This is a really clever variation.

I do not have the Andrus book, but I had the good

fortune of going to a convention he was yhe star

of in the late eighties and he taught a version

of the slop shuffle. You end up with all the

cards the same way except the bottom one and

immediately spread. If that is the trick it is

without question IMHO the best slop shuffel I

know.......Mike Walsh

Mike, yes, that is the version explained in the Andrus book. Both Stephen Minch and John Bannon referred me to this handling (John uses it in his new book).

Here is another reference:

"Slop shuffle" pp. 44-46, THE MAGIC WORLD OF STEWART JUDAH edited by John Braun (this is a great book, available for a few pennies from Magic Inc.

There is "Optical Delusion" in "The Cervon File",
which leaves the deck in the original order when finished.

Thank you Terrence. I looked it up, it is "Optic Delusion" pp. 22-25 THE CERVON FILE. This appears to be the same concept as the Andrus idea, though Andrus is not credited. However, it is a very nice handling with the bonus of keeping the entire deck in order.

Hi:
An earlier poster (John Carey) mentioned a routine involving the slop shuffle in Giobbi 5:

"Giobbi has a beautiful handling in card college 5 which is a table top handling based on a Larry Jennings trick from almanac. this has a time machine themed presentation combining triumph, ambitious card and a red black seperation."

Can anyone help me with a specific reference in CC5? John hasn't posted recently.

Thanks

Sounds an awful lot, (in fact, EXACTLY), like the Marlo effect recently released as part of Ron Bauer's "Private Studies Series", Called "The Time Machine"! And it does use the "Slop Shuffle", with proper credit to Sid Lorraine, among a host of other credits, and a ton of generally good info and useful tips, slieghts, etc. You know, the stuff you've come to expect from RB...

I included a 'Back in Time' triumph type trick in my new e-book that uses the slop shuffle. Different ending/effect than Sankey's. I didn't explain the shuffle though. I assumed anyone interested in buying the book would probably know it.

I have been using a Slop Shuffle revelation of four aces (or a royal flush) since I was in grade school. It will be in the next Genii Flim-Flamagic column (I claim no credit for any of it, all I recall is that I worked it out independently).

I saw Jon Leclair teach this in his lecture a few years ago. I think it was subsequently published in MAGIC. Jerry Sadowitz may have had it in print earlier, I believe he said something to that effect in a Crimp issue.

Keep in mind that I have been doing this since at least 1959, so it is doubtful I learned it from those sources.

Quick note to Euan and the rest who share an interest in historical accuracy in our literature;

Some of us publish via private letters. That way we can get feedback from peers without wasting the communities time on unpolished works and also refine novel material without fear of "variations" appearing in print.

Some of the squabbling about "who invented what" is market driven. I'm sorry to see that, as it also slows down the published flow of novel works.

I'm still waiting for a properly credited version of Expert Card Technique annotated with some stories about HOW the material got written up and how folks felt about finding their pet tricks taken into print with "invented" methods.

If we all growl loud enough and vote with our wallets, we can have a better and more scholarly literature. Keep grousing and growling, they will get the message.
