September Genii arrived

Postby troublewit » August 14th, 2005, 11:28 am

Received the September Genii yesterday (8-13) in Indiana. (Go Post Office!)

Great feature on Daryl. Mark Wilson's sojourn to China and the David Groves article are enjoyable reads.

A very nice treatment of the 3 Daryl effects written by David Acer, with Earle Oakes' usual clear and detailed drawings.
Especially enjoyed the "riddle" of "Diminishing Returns", an illustrated conundrum with a nice magical twist.

Kudos, Richard and company

Question for Genii subscribers outside the US:

Does it really matter about delivery as long as you're getting a magazine every month? Maybe I have too many books and magazines to read but it's never mattered much to me as long as I got the magazines regularly.

Just wondering...

I've found that the magazine tends to arrive in this little country in the first week of the month, and last month's came on the 7th; so August's issue is becoming noticeably tardy.

No Steve, it doesn't matter but I like to check that the postal system doesn't have it in for me, and whether other UK subscribers are still waiting.

Richard, different country but I heard someone say it was a small world. :)

Actually, let me expand a bit upon what's happening with our UK delivery.
We were originally using a company called World Distribution and were having problems with timely delivery in the UK.
We switched our UK deliveries to a different company called Johnson and Heyword and things seemed to be much better.
NOW, Pitney Bowes has bought both World Distribution AND Johnson and Heyword, and totally screwed things up! Instead of improving delivery, they have made it worse because they are channeling everything through a single warehouse that is overwhelmed.
Unfortunately there aren't any alternatives at the moment since all the companies that do this kind of work in the US have been bought and consolidated (don't you love corporate America?).
So, I apologize for the delays with the delivery of the July, August, and also the September issue (which is already on its way).
We are going to try shipping out of a different facility in the same company for the October issue with the hope that delivery will be more timely.
Thanks for your patience!

Daryl unleashed some seriously fine mojo in the September Magicana. I think "Diminishing Returns" is one of the best routines he's ever published.

Richard,

Appreciate the update, and explanation, I think we just became too spoilt with the issues that used to arrive before the month began! Will let you know when the August issue reaches this side of the pond!

Rich.

Arrived today, 8/16 in Baltimore (which is actually a few days ahead of its usually arrival -- normally I tend to get it on the 19th or 20th)...

And Daryl's face is rubbing off on my fingers, but that might have something to do with the 64 percent humidity today...

Just can't figure out the mail system. I just received my AUGUST issue late last week (thought it was lost in the mail) and now, 6 days later, I get my Sept issue. Ultimately, a good thing as I am going on vacation next week and will be able to lounge around the pool and read two issues now.

September 2005 issue just arrived in Northern Virginia August 17.

I really like the "Martin's Misdirection" comic strip in each issue. (He actually has books you can purchase at: Martin\'s Misdirection Book Shop )

As noted above, The September Genii bearing the image of the Fooler-Dooler Man arrived on the southern banks of the Potomac today. Contents look great but haven't had a chance to read it yet.

Have not only received but have READ the current issue, and it's a doozy. The big articles (Daryl including some cool tricks, Paul Wilson on The Takedown) are fine, but the small stuff to me was really special. I love it when something in a magazine gets me excited about magic and inspires me again, and this was the case with David Groves' delightfully written tale of his lecture tour and Carl Mercurio's piece on Simon Lovell's new show in NYC. Re Simon, it's inspiring to see someone take the "same old crap" (to use a Mac King phrase) he has always done and turn it into a full evening show with a theme, direction, etc. That of course is what Ricky Jay did as well. I saw him do most of what is in 52 Assistants 20 years earlier in a college show at San Diego State, but suddenly with direction and focus it's all new again, another "overnight success." Finally, I've never scored 100% on Max's Inquisition, but I came close this month, laughing all the way.

Other comments:
1. David Groves needs to start including photos of these waitresses he keeps meeting.
2. You need to insert a "the" in the URL to get to Jon Allen's web site. So it's http://www.thesilenttreatment.co.uk. I know this was also in another thread, but whatever, it's a great trick. You'll love the video.
3. I was unfamiliar with Paul Osborne's The Ghost Walks illusion advertised, so visited his web site for the first time. Very nice. Has anyone seen his videos Nightmare from Magicland and The World's Worst Magicians? Parodies of famous magicians plus footage of just bad magicians. Sounds hilarious, but also scary: you could be on them!

DARYL article was great. Having been around him when he was a young teen whiz in the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Area it is great to see hisi progress from an eager beginning kid to one of the top thinkers and doers in magic.

I noted his inspiration was from seeing Slydini on the Electric Impressions TV show in San Francisco. I should note that the sad part was it was a LIVE show, hence NO TAPES. I would have loved to have a tape of that show as I was on it, and I was the magici advisor that booked Slydini. (That's when I learned Tony's real name as I had to have him sign a contract)!

Received my issue in San Fernando Valley. And thanks to Pete (and Brent for having Daryl's great lecture at the Magic Apple) I got my picture in this issue. Next time Pete's there with his camera, I will sit in the front row!

p.s. Pete, I took your picture at that lecture. Will email it to you if you would like to have it.
