Earl Nelson's Tricks in the August Genii

Postby Richard Kaufman » July 18th, 2001, 10:54 am

I'd like to hear from our readers regarding the way we explained the two Earl Nelson effects in the August issue of Genii. Instead of Earle Oakes' drawings, there were so many that I decided to go with a "Stars of Magic" style photographic approach.

I thought the photos illustrating the Earl Nelson tricks were great -- is this a new photographer?

The "transparent hand" in one trick and the photo of the lapping of the cards showing the action were great.

This photographer is real good, and the black background made everything very clear.

Nice job!

The photographer is Damon Webster, an executive with Saatchi & Saatchi (is that how you spell it?) on the west coast. It took at least two photo shoots to get everything right.
I think the thing with the transparent hand shown during the Vernon Transfer Move is a new innovation with a photo in our field. Has anyone ever seen it before? It was easy for our Art Director to do once I explained what I wanted. Computers are a wonderful thing!

I've seen that technique done within the camera (double exposure, etc). But I haven't seen it in the context of Magic.

It is nice that computers can aide in our art.

One of the arguments in favor of illustrations versus line drawings has always been that you can do things like X-ray and transparent views. As you can see by that photo in the August issue, you can now do it with photos, too. ;)

I haven't seen the August issue yet, but the application sounds both novel and effective.

In my opinion, however, there's something more timeless about the line drawings done by Oakes, Onosaka, and Kaufman.

Also, I still find line drawings to be better in eliminating needless visual elements(shadows, etc).

A side note: There is a feature on Corel Photo Shop that can change any photograph into an exquisite looking drawing. I don't know what to make of all this!

Josh,
Can you send me a jpeg of one of those "exquisite looking drawings" made from a photo?

It basically outlines objects in a picture. I'll send one over to you and, if possible, post it on the message board.

The photos were a nice change from the usual line drawings. They made me nostalgic for the photos of Larry Jennings that accompanied the early Charlie Miller issues of Magicana*. Loved in general seeing an extended piece on Earl Nelson. He's such a classy magician and a living link to the magic of the Castle's golden age. *(I think there is a big market to see Charlie's columns published as a book. We were discussing this on Gemini recently.)

The Genii Corporation will publish a book on The Best of Magicana in the future.

Richard: Please include "Time Machine" in that book. One of my favorites, with that nifty little spin move.

Hi Steve, Yes, it's quite a famous trick (by Steve Freeman) and we'll probably put it in. I think it was already reprinted in Genii once in the 60th Anniversary issue.

Richard,

To let people know, Damon is also a very highly regarded and award-winning photographer as well as being in the ad biz. His very artistic photos have appeared in numerous magazines.

I like the photos, but the tricks themselves are waaaaaay cool!! "Jumping Jacks Redux" is one of the better things I have read in awhile. I'm gonna work on it.

The Earl Nelson tricks are great. I have read them over the last few days.
I'm going to use the "Jumping Jacks Redux" tonight..... just kidding!

Cool add on and a Maze second deal lap....awsome.
These will take some work to get.
What a great article/tricks!
