Andrus' Double Dimension from 9/04

Postby Tabman » August 24th, 2004, 9:20 am

I'm wondering if anyone else is working on this effect. I've been having a heck of a time digging the moves out of the text so I've been trying to distill it down to the basic elements in an effort to learn this exactly as written and seemingly preformed by Mr. Andrus. The only change I am personally making is to substitute a casino chip for the silver dollar to use as an opening for my chip matrix and maybe a way to ditch the $100 chip in the end. Anyway I'm almost done with my summary of the moves. If anyone wants a copy just drop me an email to jerrystrick@questx.com and I'll email it to you when I'm done.-=tabman

30+ requests since yesterday. thats cool and you're welcome but i had to do it for myself as theres so many little moves. finally last night i felt a taste of the performance rhythm (which is quite up tempo) as i was going over the moves (and gloria is talking non-stop to me about the olympics) for the umteenth time wondering if i was just wasting my time with a pipe dream again. these notes are a sidebar to the article so you need a good look at those photos in genii and to read the description as many times as is necessary to get a good feel for it, then you can follow it move for move with the summary. for you musicians reading, this effect is very musical complete with a cymbal crash (when the card in the right hand is snapped over as the clincher at the end of the middle part!! i expect this will take several months for me to get a good preformance down as it's like learning to play a whole new style on an old instrument and i want to learn it note for note.

Having seen Jerry perform this fine piece of magic countless times both before, during and after we did the photographs, I can say that it is indeed a stunning thing to behold. Once you get the hang of it, it's not exceptionally difficult, and more importantly, it should look effortless.

And Shawn is right: "...as you practice this and curse every time you flash, drop the coin, or position the cards incorrectly, always keep this fact in mind: there is an 85-year old man in Oregon who can do this flawlessly."

I can only imagine from the description and the photographs but roday I caught a little of the rhythm almost all the way through and one thing thats fun about it is that you've got to fool yourself. Im missing a little at the end of the second part but Im closing in on it. Its a great piece of magic. Thanks for bringing it to us. I'm trying to get a sense of the tempo that he does it in beats per minute. Did you have a metronome with you that day??? :)

The Genii article mentions that Jerry's Miser's Miracle was the basis for Double Dimension. I've been talking with Jerry Andrus all week about both effects and Jerry still has copies available of Miser's Miracle. So with his permission if you want to get a copy of Miser's Miracle or any of Jerry's DVDs email me at misersmiracle@questx.com and I will put you in touch with Jerry. This would be a great way to give a little back to him. Please put contact Jerry as the subject.
thanks,

I really enjoyed reading the article about Jerry's work. It painted an image in my mind of a truly original performer.
This coin routine sounds great. I really enjoy performing coin magic, and this seems to be a great way to introduce a coin.
With concern to the use of a Poker chip, i personally think that it works better using a dollar, there is more weight, which i find easier to manipulate, it is also more appealing for an audience member (in my opinion).
I have never seen or read any of Jerry's stuff prior to this article, and now i feel as though i have been missing out on something.

Owen, then you should email Jerry and get a copy of his Miser's Miracle. Double Dimension is just part of this great routine. In Miser's Miracle you produce four silver dollars. Each production gets more impossible than the last. You can email my autoresponder at misersmiracle@questx.com and it will put you in touch with Jerry. Please put contact Jerry as the subject.

I first became aware of Jerry Andrus around 1970 when I picked up a set of his Linking Safety Pins. I think most of this info is in the Genii stories about Jerry though. He sells the Miser's Miracle for $15US and pays postage to the USA. It might be a little more to your house but you'd need to check with him on that. I'm just a fan of his work and I'm having a lot of fun with Double Dimension and have started working out the details of Miser's Miracle.

I would suggest getting his DVD's "A Lifetime of Magic" a 3 volume set available through Meir Yedid at MyMagic.com and through most dealers. Volume 3 has "Miser's Miracle" as well as a number of other effects. He is a truly unique and creative individual. He is also known for "Zone Zero" and some of the most unique card handling/sleights you will ever see.

Jerry told me that you can get the DVDs directly from him too. He was paid in DVDs so getting them directly from him helps pay him a little. You can email my autoresponder at misersmiracle@questx.com and it will put you in touch with Jerry. Please put contact Jerry as the subject.

Tabman,
Do you have Jerry's DVDs? I was looking at the contents, and i think that this might be a better way of learning the routine. I prefer reading books, instead of buying DVDs, i think that you can learn more from them; but it seems as though you get quite a lot for your money with these DVDs...Has anybody got them? Any reviews?

I'm a book guy too Owen but I've ordered the DVD from Jerry with Miser's Miracle on it so I can get the tempo that Jerry is doing it. I wish I lived closer to Jerry but not near as far away as you.

I have mr Adrus Lifetime of Magic and I can recommend them for anyone.

The videos have, unlike some others, a variety of effects both quantitatively and qualitatively. However, while not all of the material is good for anyone I cannot really see any serious student to be dissapointed.

Some of the material requires build items but none are difficult at all. Most of the effects do require a fair bit of practising as we are to expect from his material. I cannot really say anything negative about the tapes.

Some people have been saying that his performances and executions of the sleights are not very good and that he is too old (anyone can figure out themselves what kind of forums have been stating this opinion). Yes, fair enough, the man is over 80, but does that reduce the quality of magic? I do not think so. Yes some of the moves are probably not executed as well as they once were but does this reduce the possibilities of the move taught? I do not think that either. In fact, I believe it can be a good thing, there is less to copy from the tapes and the learning process will be quite different.

Why do I, then, even mention this? Because I think it is important to realise that you will not be getting a Daryl tape or a Wilson tape but a tape from an old master with truly original effects. If that means that the performances are not as good as those made by the younger magicians, so what? But it is still an aspect of the tape that should be realized and some people have been put off by that.

Go and get the set, you will not be dissapointed.
