Card magic anthology

A place where beginners can participate, ask questions, and post their views. However, beginners typically ask a lot of questions about sources, tricks, books, and so on. In fact, all magicians are interested (or should be) in the provenance of tricks, ideas, and related matters. This department will service these needs.

Card magic anthology

Postby degrisy » February 11th, 2013, 9:17 pm

I would like to know if there is a source of classic effects with cards, maybe with history/origin along with method, because I am tired to read twists and variations when the original is not described. I only know the dvd serie by Michael Ammar, but I would prefer a printed source. Thank you,

Roberto

Yes, you want to buy Robertio Giobbi's five volumes of Card College. Excellent books available directly from the publisher, Hermetic Press. They've been translated into almost every language all around the world!

I know of editions in German and English. I've seen lots of mention of all the languages it's been translated into. Does anyone have a list of the edition languages?

I've seen twenty listed in some articles.

Magicpedia lists Vollmer's translation (not all five volumes yet) into French and Hatch's into English.

This along with the Giobbi's original in German are the only editions I found with a summary search of the interwebs.

I sort of assumed that Mandarin and Spanish editions existed. I secretly suspect they have not been translated to quite the extent the magic community touts.

I would dearly love to be shown that I'm wrong. Visions of Card College in Aramaic and Urdu are dancing in my head.

Of course I own many of your books (and Giobbi masterwork), but to me none of them can be considered an anthology of CLASSIC effects with cards. They can be considered antologies, but in the sense that they are a mix of original effects, variations on classic effects, moves etc. by different authors.

Encyclopedia of Card Magic and Royal Road to Card Magic have a number of effects that are now considered classic.

How do you define "classic"? That definition could go in many directions as we have seen here many times when folks are looking for best of lists. One mans classic may not have the same appeal to another's. in this months Genii Giobbi lists his top 10, if you master all of those you will out do most other magicians by a long shot.

It seems to me that what Mr. Degrisy is looking for is one book (or set of books) with a collection of classic (as in now "standard") effects much in the way that Michael Ammar's set of videos was such a collection. In fact, I suspect he'd like to see a set of books with exactly (and just) those effects in it. Of course no such set of books exists and, as attractive as it might sound, I hope none ever does. Where's the funor the educationin that?

The book exists: it's called Greater Magic.
The set of books exist: they're called The Tarbell Course in Magic.

Both great, but still not what he's describing/wanting. "Triumph," "Red Hot Mama" ("Chicago Opener"), "Dunbury Delusion," "Daley's Last Trick," "Twisting the Aces," and "Card Warp" (to name just a few of the items that appear on the "anthology" of Ammar's "Easy to Master" series that Mr. Degrisy is referencing) are not in those books.

The answer to his original question is that what he wants does not exist.

It exists, just not with the "modern" tricks you have named, or not as a book.

Classic to me is a standard effect, one that has many variations, like the four aces, but also like reset or wild card or even out of this world, open prediction, any card at any number, kolossal killer...

That is what I meant. If such a book does not exist someone should write it: to me it would be both fun and aducational as it would represent a reference and a solid foundation for further research.
Someone knows if there is a site on the internet listing the classic effects of card magic?

A pair of books that would fit your description were written by Frank Garcia 30 years ago: Million Dollar Card Secrets and Super Subtle Card Miracles. He got in a lot of trouble for including everyone's material without permission.
