There are some books that were numbered using Roman numerals.
Those were the ones that were used as comps.
The books numbered using Arabic numerals represented the 500 books limited to be sold to the general public.

Come on Gordon, how can anyone be more pedantic than a person who uses the word pedanticism in a sentence? :)
