Magic Circle Council Chairman Brian Sibley has been involved in many radio broadcast dramas and written many books over the years, but few are as highly regarded as his momentous adaption of Tolkien's trilogy Lord of the Rings first broadcast on the radion on the BBC in England in 1981.
The BBC has just re-released the multiple CD set starring a multitude of the best British actors:

And here it is on amazon.com for much less:

You can read about it on Brian's Blog here:

And read here where Brian tells the story of the production at length:

As a fan of British radio drama, I would highly recommend it, however it has been declared the definitive adaption of Tolkien's works by many before me.

Totally agree. I have listened to this many times and each time is as enjoyable as the first. If you have not done the book on tape thing for a long car trip alone or with the family you are missing out. The guy who did the Harry Potter BOCD's Jim Dale is great as well.

You can buy it as a download directly from the BBC at a much cheaper price 6.99 or $10.99:

I would also highly recommend Brian's dramatisation of the Mervyn Peake Gormenghast books which won Brian the Best Adaptation Award in the inaugural BBC Audio Awards last year:
