All right, but the next time we meet, you owe me a torrent of verbal abuse. In the interest of fairness, you should wait until I show you a trick.

Was there ever a good magician who spent time with Vernon that he didn't tongue-lash?

BTW, that wasn't meant to be a rehetorical, snarky question. I was asking because from what I've read, he was reputed to be a tough critic of pretty much everyone. I was just curious if anyone in particular seemed to get less of the business.

I'll take a shot: The Bruce Cervon videos. Not that Richard is going to give in with a right guess...

I still think the Vernonator would be a good app to develop...might have to give David Ben a call.

Richard Kaufman wrote:It's not Giorgio. I published all of his best magic routines, with the exception of his three-card monte, in his special issue of Genii.
So publish his monte routine then.

I wish. Actually did a day's work on Jennings recently, but no, that's not it.

The Professor was willing and able to criticize when he saw fit. But, it was rarely as abusive as people now imagine.

Giorgio showed me his monte when I visited him, and I still have the cards he used. His move was unbelievable to see, even from a couple of feet away; the top card seems to melt through. I can only imagine what it was like in his prime...

Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
My guess for who is the subject magician of Richard's Secret Project is a magician who died before his time, had quite a few different names and made most of them famous, was connected to a famous non magic event in US history, and Richard was at his funeral. His wife also died before her time.
I'll not actually name who I am referring to but if it is that person then a collection of their material would be an awesome task.
Richard will know to whom I'm referring and can either confirm or deny. Should he deny................then I will name who I thought/think it is.
Transpired that this guy actually had an Irish name which surprised Richard who I believe wasn't aware of it until after his death.
Cheers from the Emerald Isle of Ireland.

Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
Hello,
I also directly thought to Mike Skinner as: one of the most famous close-up magicians in the last quarter of the 20th century. He published some during his lifetime, but nearly enough and he died prematurely.
But Skinner was most a performer (performing close up magic professionally for lay people each night) than a creator this is something quite obvious from his 3 performance only DVD's.
Next to the material already published in Classic Sampler, Intimate Magic, in periodicals and on his 4 DVDs (this makes already a very significant contribution to the Art) is there that much left to be published?
Regards
Th.

Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
Max is correct: Vernon was not abusive. But he could be strongly critical, which is a good thing. But he was only critical to people he cared about. If he didn't know you, or didn't like you, he just would make some non-commital remark. Sometimes he would say, to be polite, "That's good," or something along those lines. This led to advertisements where such off-the-cuff remarks were used as endorsements!

Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
He didn't die young, but I would give someone's left nut for a Charlie Miller compendium, or even a nice reprint of ALL of his Magicana columns. That column was always the first place I turned in Genii, whether it was a new issue, or an older one I had picked up. I miss his smooth writing that brought out his own enthusiasm for the magic, and magicians, he encountered. I still use two items in my stage show that he taught in his column. They are THAT good.
I've been told it will never happen, but I can still wish.

My memory is that - particularly towards the end of his life - he tried to find nice things to say. Which was why in those days so many ads contained his commendations.
So if he lashed Richard then....well....

Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
Vernon didn't like the project I was working on at the time, which was the idea of Michael Ammar: for me to add several hundred illustrations to Expert at the Card Table. To that I added the idea having it annotated. He didn't like that at all, Gary Ouelett made sure that didn't make it into the original Videonics tapes, but I believe you can see Vernon give a tongue-lashing to Michael Ammar after his performance of "Triumph."
When L&L reedited the project, the part about me went in for the first time, and the part about Ammar was edited out.

Ok - this isn't a guess. But this thread has reminded me of somebody.
Anybody know what happened to Pascal Monmoine? He had some great stuff in PABULAR and SPELLBINDER magazine. But - I have never seen him mentioned again in print.
Would be curious to see if he is still in magic - or if he ever published anything else?

Re: Announcement of a Secret Project
erdnasephile,
As a young man I didn't take advantage of the opportunity to sit with Dai as much as I should have. If you were a serious student of magic and really showed you were making an effort, he was very supportive and kind. He patiently showed me over and over what the Erdnase bottom palm should look like until I got it.
I was pretty shy and in awe of him, but I kick myself now for not spending more time with him, once that door was opened.
