Is there any work around for getting a borrowed object into a chunk of amber? Something that sets to an easily shattered consistancy etc?

You would use some sort of tinted plastic that dries almost instantaneously when two compounds are mixed together.

Years ago I did some work with the stuff you're talking about, making a gaff that looked like an ice cube. If memory serves me right ( I know, mother of all qualifying prefaces) it takes at least an hour to begin to set properly.

For the hole/slot - likely just a minute maybe two and not to have fumes. Probably not more as folks have seen Jurasic Park.

At a guess the critical feature would be having the chunk look solid and the shadow of the imbedded object stay in place.

On the working side, the hammer has to give a decent tap before the 'amber' item shatters to free the contents.
