Magic Castle Happenings – The Good Stuff (August 2012)

Postby Dustin Stinett » August 1st, 2012, 6:35 pm

The Future and Past Collide (in a good way)

The first week of August is Future Stars Week at the Magic Castle and on August 1, 101-year-old John Calvert will be interviewed by Greg Wilson. The event starts at 8:00 PM in the Inner Circle.

And if Thats Not Enough

Sunday August 5 is another Young Adults Night where young men and women who have reached the ripe old age of 13 can enjoy the Magic Castle during evening hours (in the company of an adult). Remember that the dress code applies!

Were Hot for Firefighters (in a good way)!

Firefighters Appreciation Night is August 6 and honors the men and women of the LAFD who saved our cherished Magic Castle last October. $45* includes a buffet, roaming performers, a full lineup of shows, beer and wine tasting, and more. The festivities start at 5:30.

*$15 of that directly offsets the cost of the attendance of the firefighters and their spouses.

Yummy for the Tummy: Easy on the Wallet

The Member Menu for August:

Aug. 1: Peruvian Chicken Stir Fry (Saltado de Pollo), Steamed Rice
Aug. 6, 7, 8: Chicken Parmesan with Pasta
Aug. 13, 14, 15: Roasted Pablano, Corn and Vegetable Lasagna
Aug. 20, 21, 22: BBQ Brisket, Baked Beans, Coleslaw
Aug. 27, 28, 29: Shrimp Tacos, Beans and Rice

Hooty-Hoot!*

Whos Hoo with Fitzgerald tapes on August 7 starting at 9 PM in the Inner Circle. His victimserrguests are Woody Pittman and Armando Lucero!

[size:8pt]*Obscure TV show reference. Do you know from where?[/size]

But Will the Mystery of the Ages Finally be Answered?

Which is, How does one really pronounce equivoque?

I dont know if that will be answered, but on August 8, the Member Perk will be a talk on talking: The Secrets of Verbal Manipulation with Castle regular Jheff. This member only event starts at 8 PM in the Inner Circle.

Ill Shave Extra-Close in Preparation of Being Smacked by the Winner

Monday August 13 sees the return of the Strolling Magic Smackdown at the Magic Castle. Event check in for competitors and judges (members only) begins at 7 PM. Contact Smackdown Referee Scott Scotto Smith at ssmith@magiccastle.com.

Back by Overwhelming Demand

An Evening with Guimares and DelGaudio takes over the Peller Theatre for three shows a night on August 14, 21, and 28. Show times are 8:30, 10:00 and 11:15 PM. First come, first served. (Note that these dates are all Tuesdays and that there is no truth to the rumor that the lines begin forming on the preceding Monday mornings.)

Be My Ballantine

Clear your schedule and ink this special Members Meet-Up on Wednesday August 15: Ballantines Day hosted by Joan Lawton and Saratoga Ballantine with a panel discussion on comedy with (hold on to your hats): Jeff Altman, John Carney, Milt Larsen, Larry Wilmore, and some surprises.

The no-host dinner starts at 6 PM in the Dante Room (get reservations for that through Erin Chick at the Castlespace is limited so act now). Dinner is not required for the event proper which starts at 8 PM in the Inner Circle. Hope to see you there (and I better find out what Roasted Pablano is)!

Worried About Harrys Table Manners?

Then dont eat with him and instead attend one of the Non-dining Houdini Sances that will be held on August 30 at 6, 8, and 9:45 PM. Parties of 4 to 12 can attend for only $35 per person (an additional $5 will get you a commemorative coin). Ben Roman is Harrys representative at the Castle. Give him a call at (323) 851-3313 x434.

Gettin Schooled in August

The August Lecture schedule is:

Aug. 5: Mark Strivings
Aug. 12: Boris Wild
Aug. 19: Daniel Ketchedijian
Aug, 26: John Carney

All lectures are held in the Parlour of Prestidigitation and begin promptly at 3 PM.

Very close Joe. It was actually on the Andy Griffith Show, but it was in fact Gomer coming up with a signal between him and Barney during a search for a dangerous prison escapee. (Gomer wanted Barney to say, Chicka-chee! and he would answer, Hooty-Hoot!). It was one of the few times Andy carried a weapon during the series. Barney and Gomer were the comedy relief and it has become one of the great but under-recognized scenes in all of television.

Dustin,

Looks like we are both correct.

In addition to the "Andy Griffith Show" episode you mentioned, it was also used later in this episode of "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.".

Hooty-Hoot! Hooty-Hoot!

I'm thinking that should be our signal between members at the Magic Castle...

...or not.

Alba, early Parlor: Like John Carney, she infuses simple, classic effects with the energy of her enchanting, witty presence. More than just experiencing "mystery" or coming away satisfactorily entertained, I left her show, twice, feeling content, optimistic and momentarily unburdened. Well worth staking out a place in the pretty reasonable Parlor line. Another great booking at the Genii 75th Anniversary.

Thanks EHO. I'm sure you recall the time when Genii had Jules Lenier's column, "Knights at the Magic Castle." I'd love it if you--and other regulars who get there more often than I--could post in these "Good Stuff" threads more bits like this: the great performers, lecturers, celebrity sightings--all the fun stuff.

Thanks!
Dustin
