EMC DAY 3

Postby Magic Newswire » July 29th, 2012, 12:44 am

The final day of the final Essential Magic Conference is upon us. I for one must say that I am again blown away by the quality of this content. If you aren't participating, you can't imagine what you are missing.

As I write this, the videos from Day Two are now online and available for members to stream.

Can't wait to see more and thanks again to Damian for his play by play of the event.

I spent Day 3 watching the last session from Day 2, which was a killer. De Matos explained one of the most innvolved methods of any trick I've ever seen. I was introduced to Daniel Madison, a great card talent, unknown to me. Cyril Takayama had fames shooting from his bare hand! Bill Kalush explored some amazing history of card magic, from 600 years ago!

Just fabulous. If you're not one of the 2,000 people who are part of this, you're really missing out.

Can't wait for day 3 to begin.

Eric Mead hosting

Armando Lucero talking about what is magic, a massive subject! He discusses how to find out who we are, with a great story about how he got booked as a comedian and juggler despite being a magician!

He explains how tricks are the things we do to achieve magic. Not the same things. He examines what other tools we have to achieve the effect of creating magic for the audience.

7:2

Richard Wiseman talking about perception. Some great video clips and pictures illustrating his points. Talking about chronofilm finding the first film of a magician performing in 1892 doing a ball vanish. It's like a time travelling machine. He ended with a trick. Two decks with numbers printed on. Mead shuffled, ribbon spreads and pushes a card. Wiseman deals his into 4 hands of 4. Mead selects one of the 4 hands. He turns over his selected card. His hand adds up 22. Not only that, every hand adds up to 22. And then every row, every corner, ever 4 adds to 22. A magic square with cards.

7:3

Luis Piedrahita just produced 4 silver dollars from dome small piece of bubble wrap. Then goes into a matrix using the bubble wrap .

7:4

Steve Cohen talking about Hofzinzer and recreating his salon. He explains the history of the original salon and how The Hof (sorry) got to his salon. The show ran for 11 years. About how he learnt about The Hof's motivation for doing a salon. He goes onto to explain how he applied what he learned to his own show with refreshing honesty.

He shares 3 lessons he learned doing his show. You'll have to register to learn these points...

7:5

Yann Frisch on creativity. About the concept of author and the interpreter. About how to understand where you want to get to with your creativity and how to get there. A stage is a blank space and anything is possible. How magic is a personal art. Don't limit yourself with preconceptions about what is possible. You are the author of your act.

He chose not to use music. When you have the blank space, everything you add means something else isn't there. So adding music takes away the natural noises in his act. The balls and cup hitting the table etc.

You need a desire to say something, to do something, to make something.

7:6 Dr Gene Matasure on Winston Freer, a relatively unknown name, and his Maxam Ring illusion. He'd levitate a woman standing on a table totally surrounded. Gene shares a picture of this. The picture was called a fake, but it wasn't. He did a lot of classic magic, including Rice Bowls, and his twist on this classic.

Freer did unique effects. Test tubes in a rack with different coloured liquids in. Spec had free choice to pick a colour. Freeer would say he could make his hands into a water tight container. Took spec's choice and poured it into his fist, with a thermometer sticking out. The red line of the therm would be seen to go down and down and he'd open his hand and there was a chunk of blue ice in the shape of his closed fist.

He went on to explain another unique trick that is the craziest thing I've heard of. Too complicated to explain and you wouldn't believe me anyway!

The Maxam Ring is three rings, examinable, that link together. Ad in old Genii from 1940s. Gene demonstrates it. It is as described.

7:7

Bill Kalush talking about askalexander.com and gives every EMC participant a free month's access to this amazing resource with 2.5 million pages of magic books and journals he has there.

He's introducing a brand new translation feature which looks amazing!

And gives away a month's access to everyone at EMC

7:8

Richard Wiseman interviews the astonishing (ahem) Paul Harris. He's not spoken at a magic convention for many many years. Starts off with a deep question from the chat room "if you had a dog what would it be called".

What is the creative process, where do you start?

Start anywhere. An idea, an object, an effect, a method, something that is pretty. He illustrates this by talking about the bottle of water he is holding and describes how he can think about it. Approach it.

Oh look, this is too amazing and rare, and you'll just need to register to hear it.

Hosted by Guy Hollingworth

Stan Allen - Thinking about things.

It is good to stretch yourself.

Support your local magic shop. If you don't have one, support the sites with excellent customer service. Support the good guys

If you have to work pull everyone into your show

Pricing. Everyone wants to know this at first and you might now want to tell them at the beginning of the conversation. Be flexible. Special offers are always good. Free party favours or something.

Kids are smart. Kids's show magic needs to be even smarter. Don't rely on just "kids'" magic.

Give more than you take.

Impact and emotion. Puzzles are ok, but if your want to impact people you need to elevate it beyond a puzzle. Talking with Copperfield's Flying. And how people dream of flying. No one dreams of pushing a cig through a quarter. Emotional hook.

What is timing. Importance of pausing.

Creativity. Be original. Your own magic/routines/personality. Many people think they aren't creative. Stop using the word create and swop it for innovate. Start small, but start. Look outside the world of magic.

Single piece of advice. You don't his advice. You have everything you need to get started.

Stop thinking about it, just do it.

8:2

Michel Clavello takes empty paper bag and shows it empty to spec. He does the Eric Morcombe bag flicking move to suggest a ball has landed in it. Laughs. Then real ball appears. Vanishing appearing ball. Spec is seated. Lightbulb and cards introduced. All genuine. Card is selected. Returned. Deck cut into 4. The lightbulb touched to the 4 packets. It lights on one packet. Packet is spread out, lightbulb touched on the cards one at a time, it lights up on her card. Last effect, takes a coin. Places it on specs hand. covered with a silk. it gets her to touch the coin through the silk to check it is sthere. then silk and coin are made to vanish!

8:3

Extra bonus event.

David Blaine and friends.

Bil Kaloush, Paul Harris and Blaine chatting to each other. Blaine talking about how star struck he was meeting Harris. Blaine talking about what a great learning curve doing restaurant magic is. How quickly you have to learn.

Bill knew Blaine was living in his beat up old car. Blaine had an idea that magic didn't need to be on stage, cheesy sets etc. He shot street magic ideas on his own, showed the others and didn't know what to do. Called up Harris and Weber and said HELP I'VE GOT A SHOW WHAT DO I DO!

Blaine called up Harris and went to visit him. That first night they took some magic mushrooms and walked around laughing their heads off. He asked Harris if it was OK to just do little simple things. What are the simplest things we can do that would effect someone on a guttural level.

Bill is talking to him now about stunts. So people would immediately understand this was something different.

Bill now says that Blaine transformed magic on TV. What do you think when you see other people have copied him. Blaine doesn't get upset by it.

David says he is working towards a live show, but is terrified by it. About how the need for an amplified character is essential and how it is impossibly hard to practise a live show. He plans to go round prisons etc to practise it.

Blaine was obsessed with Geller as a child. He could do one simple thing and because of his belief in it, it worked.

8:4

Luis Piedrahita

talking about performing live magic on TV every week for last 3 years.

The size of the frame, tension and relaxation. Close shot is tense, open shot is relaxed. The position of the elements in the frame. What things must always be seen.

Be prepared for everything. Keeo it simple. Live environment is very distracting. Where do you look? Millions at home, or 3 specs. You have to keep the people in studio involved, but the most important is the people at home. Know which camera you are on. Know the type of shot they are framing. Try and warm up the audience before shooting. They are hot, hungry, thirsty, can't go to loo. You need to let them know you are their friend. Give them permission to react.

Shows examples with video clips.

8:6

Derren Brown

Questions have been mailed in and Guy Hollingworth poses them to him.

Audio is really choppy in the green room, hard to hear, Sorry.

Did you have any training in acting or performance.

No, not at all, had done some hypno shows for students, and that was it. Learnt it from Andy Nyman when he was directing him.

Video insert with clip from Svengali.

Difference between stage and TV. Entertainment is the priority of a live show.

How have things changed since he wrote Absolute Magic

What he wasn't doing was anything other than close up

Sadly Skype has failed us

8:7

Woody Aragon Performance

Two specs. Cards. Shuffled. Spells DIAMOND. ace of diamond. DIAMONDS 4 of d. CLUBS, a club. SPADES, 6 spades JOKER, joker. MAXMAVEN - card with pic of Max on it. Cards given to Steve Cohen. He shuffles. Spells STEVE, looks at card that lies at E and remembers. remainder places on top. Cards fanned. Cards are taken from top and bottom and placed in the fan. All his choice. 1 card, 2 cards. whatever. Card chosen is queen of clubs. Spells queen of clubs. Queen of clubs is sure enough at the end of the spelling.

Cards spread. Tina points to any card. HE spells COLOR. It is red. SUIT. A heart. VALUE. 9. Sure enough it is the 9 of hearts. Delicious.

8:8
Panel discussion on ASTONISHMENT

Hosted by Luis de Matos

Mike Caveney explaining the illusion Well Ironed.

He explains all this always starts at askalexander.org. As this is tipping the trick, not going to go into detail.

9:2

Yann Frisch teaching some thoughts and moves from his award winning act. How attitude is so important. His motivation for his moves and transfers is amazing. Rubbing his hands on his face whilst palming a ball to give the impression his hands are empty. So many lovely thoughts.

9:3

Marvin Berglas interviews Dynamo

Talks about his upbringing, how he got into magic, how it's changed his life. How good it was to go to conventions and meet people. He got started really with investment from The Prince's Trust. The journey that he has taken, what he did, how he got there and the tenacity he has has shown to get him to where he is today.

9:4

Topas - The Hawaiian Mystery

Glass on table. Paper tube examined. Four oranges on another table. He explains what he will be doing in a comedic manner. He obviously palms one of the oranges and obviously loads it. Max Maven selects an orange. The other oranges are eliminated. Topas dons an Hawaiian lei. Spec brought out, also given a lei. Paper tube is lifted from wine glass and it is shown empty, by spec. Comedic mime and dance carries on. Spec hold orange on hand, Topas takes her hands.Orange shown to just be the orange peel. Under paper tube is now a wine glass filled with orange juice. Kicker production of a big bottle of orange juice.

9:5
Dani Da Ortiz talking about the expectation of the the spectator.

Joined by two speccies. One thinks of number. The other takes a card. Is asked if he wants to change his mind, he says yes, Dani replaces the card, the forces it on him. Nice. spec one asked to name number. Spec counts to 18. Dani offers him the chance to stop or change number all the time. they end on 18th card, it is the right card, obviously.

Dani then goes on to discuss the thinking behind the routine. What the spectator FEELS is what he remembers. Register to get the rest of the info! Tina Lennart Performance

Sorry, I will add the name of this, but it is the one with the white silk and rings. Let's call it Tina's White Silk And Ring Act for nowSuch a treat to see.

9:7

Teller

Q: what new projects are you working on, what inspiration outside magic, if you could only perform one effect for the rest of your life, what would it be

A: New piece going into the live show with a live cow. Film of Play Dead has just previewed. Few weeks meeting with a co director for doing The Tempest using magic. Prospero was a magician, so using that idea.

Q: Many well known performing duos have trouble with friendship off stage, have you ever been fooled on Fool Us and then worked it out,

A: Friendship grew out of their professional partnership. They sit and argue over material, always artistic arguments. Many rock bands start as friends, and find they can't work together. They did the opposite.

On Fool Us, when they said they were fooled they were genuinely fooled. Several times after almost immediately after they worked out something about what it was. But who cares. The purpose wasn't about them being fooled, it was to provide a showcase for all the wonderful magicians and to treat them with the respect they deserve. Have you ever broken character and spoken on stage.

Artisic competitions are usually judged by idiots that have no qualifications to judge it. This is repugnant. The whole idea of the contest on Fool Us was really irrelevant compared to the various Pop Idol programmes.

Yes, he has broken character because he might need to tell Penn something. His character is not really a character but it is him, just not talking.

Q: Are you working on a new bok of magic if so when will it be out
A: I've been invited by a publisher to do a book and a book is a lot of work for him because he is a slow writer. What he is doing now is when ideas come into his head he finds a corner of his head to put that. No date, no promise it will happen, but he is working on it

Q: Do you think it's better to learn magic from a book or a DVD
A: Complex questions. He finds DVDs a little awkward to go through, In order to add a sense of value the person surrounds the DVD with lots of explanations and stuff around this. Padding. 5 mins of worthwhile stuff then you need to wade through lots of padding.

Q: Do you still do any close up stuff? If so do you enjoy any particular effect
A: No. When he was in high school he tried to do it, he tried to do it to get popular but it made people suspicious of him

Skype gods are not loving us today. So, it's decided that Luis will connect with him on Skype later, and include it all on the DVDs

9:8

Gaetan Bloom Performace

He has a cardboard box on a table. 2 specs needed. 2 NORMAL specs, not magicians. he has a surprise for them in the box. Do you like card tricks. Luckily she says yes. He is going to riffle down and she needs to say stop. Other spec has to cover his eyes with his hand. 3 spades is selected. She whispers card to camera, Gaetan shouts it. He is going to teach her how to mark a card. By ripping a corner off. Takes out a silks inside there is a kiwi, and orange and a lemon. Makes a makeshift bag out of the silk. He introduces a little French machine that does nothing. Apparantly. Spec tears of corner and puts in mouth. card is ripped up. She slects the grapefruit. He cuts the kiwi in half, nothing. He cuts orange in half, nothing. Expecting card in grapefruit, but it is also empty. He takes a lettuce out of the box, wrapped in a ribbon. Lettuce is chopped up, nothing. All the bits in the box. He throws out the bits, but it is a lettuce. Inside lettuce its grapefruit, inside is an orange, inside that is a kiwi and inside that is a card with a corner ripped off. It matches. Absolutely awesome.

9:9

Final Q&A

Well, that's it and that's it and that's it!

Sorry for typos, or general [censored] ups. Been so much harder than I thought it would be to do this. But good lord it was fun. I've been so lucky to be here, and look around the room thinking of wayne's world meeting Alice Cooper. I'm not worthy. I've been humbled and honoured to be part of all this.

Mr Goat,
In his interview, Dynamo said his early guerilla release, Underground, did not fare well.
Apparently, Richard Kaufman said it was so bad that it made Chris Angel (?) look like Einstein.
Dynamo said this in itself would be a pretty good trick.
He then added that Richard was now wanting him for the cover of Genii.
Quite a turn around!

P.S. I hope I've caught this exchange accurately. It was late in the evening and I was trying to watch the London Olympic coverage while following the EMC feed.

When I heard Dynamo mention Richard was/wanted him for a Genii cover i was astonished. By the fact that he mentioned it publicly. Surely something like that is best kept secret until the fact.

These three days of the EMC have been the best days of MAGIC that I have ever experienced over the last thirty years.

It had everything a convention should have.

There were the tricks for those who need them, history for those of us who remember when it was just the latest news, theory for those who want to understand more and it had a chat area where you could interact.
We had gossip, sessions of Q & A, anecdotes, news, views and reviews.

All that was missing was................"and the dealers are open".

Our reporter at the front-line did an excellent job.............well done Damian.

Oh! lest I forget, we can relive the experience again, anytime we wish, with the facility to watch it on the EMC website, and also we will get the DVDs sent on later.

This is the measure by which other international conventions, past and future, will be judged.

When it comes to that great question of being value for money the answer is simply that we had the value received after the first session and the other eight sessions plus the DVDs are all a bonus.

Thank you to the organizers, tech crew, sponsors and of course the speakers who gave so generously of their time, skills and knowledge.

Cheers from the Emerald Isle of Ireland,
John Bowden

I love tricks as much as the next guy (maybe more than some). But what EMC has that few other conventions I've attended has is BRAINS. There has been so much to chew on.

Bravo to Luis and his tireless crew. Anyone who has worked in TV knows how long it takes to render video, and the sessions were turned artound for on-demand viewing in record time.

The participants were amazingly (for performers) ego-less. They were willing to shut up and let others have the stage, and were willing to contribute to the overall project wonderfully.

I haven't yet been able to watch the final session, but the EMC has been a highlight in my magic life. There will be much for me to think about in the days and months ahead.

Thanks to all who contributed.

If you weren't there as a subscriber, you'll want the DVD set when it comes out.

The more you know about magic, the more meaningful the EMC will be to you.

John Bowden wrote: "This is the measure by which other international conventions, past and future, will be judged."

I would add to that, "How other ONLINE conventions will be judged."

The unique quality of EMC is greatly created by having this group of people in one room together for four days without any conventioneers around. It's the isolation of the cast that is, I think, very much responsible for the atmosphere (all of which is facilitated by Luis deMatos, David Britland, and Marco Tempest).

The only downside of EMC is that you can't go for a beer with friends or the talent and chat about the day/what you saw etc.

But outside of that, which by it's nature they cannot facilitate, it is an amazingly good experience.

EMC, SQUARED

I watched the entire EMC as it zigged, zagged, dipped, and soared. As I was surprised, informed, confused, edified, delighted, probed, and moved, I stopped making physical and mental notes and surrendered to being in the moments it provided. I was transfixed and captive.

Let the aftermath roil on. As the reportage, gossip, and babble zip through cyberspace, resultant memes will bounce and carom in the jittery feedback loop of our social networks. The blogs will momentarily clog. Meanwhile, except for these few words, Im more or less at a loss to express my thoughts and feelings.

Let me then be contented to shout out this overwrought sentence like a boisterous fan:

THE ESSENTIAL MAGIC CONFERENCE HAS NOW CROSSED THE HOME PLATE OF A PARADIGM SHIFT IT WAS THE FIRST TO RECOGNIZE, PREDICT, PROMOTE, AND IS NOW LARGELY RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING HAPPEN.

The 2000 + subscribers are now recovering from a three-day binge. They have seen what the future of conferences will look like. They have seen what a hive of creative minds can produce.

The old models of magic conventions now look quaint, doddering, and inefficient. The satisfaction-dissatisfaction ratio grows wider by the hour.

Granted, the EMC was occasionally messy, incoherent, and glitchy, but the trade-offs were worth it. There was lots of real-time authenticity. There were tons of unexpected delights, mind-tweaking revelations, and intentional and unintentional humor. There were forgivable unguarded moments, several superb and artful performances, and an abundant number of tightly cohesive presentations. The air was filled with affable cultural diversity, and unfettered generosity. One consistent saw and felt a festival of kindred spirits that were truly kindred.

Over all, one EXPERIENCED real people, in real time, doing real work in a full-tilt Reality Show that was global-and-local at the same time. The multi-media were truly multiple. The chatter was ubiquitous. The energy was simmering, surging, or in a comfortable steady state.

The emotional and intellectual resonance of the EMC is yet to be determined in terms of scope, influence, and longevity. But rest assured that at this juncture, the event itself was nothing short of being nuclear.

Online think-tanks and the dead eye of the camera are great for information gathering--it can be recorded, saved, and re-watched for posterity. But the "live" nature of magic, even if recorded that way will fall short of the real thing.

Edward, I think that you can't compare apples and oranges: a live event where you are in the room with someone performing magic or talking is always going to be a different experience than if you are watching something on a screen, whether it's live or whatever.

Both types of experience now seem to be well established in our digital society, and I think we will see more online events, fewer live events, but both will continue to co-exist in the foreseeable future.

I wonder if the next logical step is to have a mixture of live and online conferences? Any takers?

I registered this year and it was truly an amazing event. \I would pay three times the amount paid in order to see another conference. Everyone at EMC was so generous, I will really miss it.

Racherbaumer, gobsmacked?

If for no other reason than this, EMC is truly unique.

Although nothing can replace face to face interaction, I rather enjoyed the format where we got a birds-eye view into a group of experts discussing things.

To that end, I would've liked to have seen them allow the pros who were there to ask questions of the speakers. I suspect that the pro's questions/comments would have expanded important points, and been more enlightening than some of our questions.

I wish I had that luck with Siri. It constantly misinterprets my verbal instructions and comes back with ridiculous answers. I switched it OFF.
