Free Magic Convention Sept 10 and 11

Postby Tabman » September 7th, 2010, 1:23 pm

Just so you know, Ive been helping Bob Sanders put a free magic gathering together at his Magic Valley Ranch in beautiful Clanton, Alabama Friday and Saturday Sept 10 and 11. There's still room for a few more. All the information available is on the website at http://magicvalleymagic.com

There are magicians and prop builders registered from all over the USA if you can imagine that.

We have to thank Bob for taking this on and he's really going all out. Can you believe there is no charge to attend this event?

I'll be there Friday and Saturday shooting video, hanging out, and hopefully making a few new friends.

Just curious if anyone from Genii Forum is planning to be at what is shaping up to be the first Redneck Magicians Convention ever. The video I plan to produce will have banjo music in the BG.

Chow!!

It's hotter than heck, hilly, and the portajons are leaning but theres some nice people there.

I just met Tommy Jackson (not the fiddler) who holds the worlds record for card tossing. ??!!??

Im shooting some video so Ill post a link in a few days in case anybody wants to take a look.

Not much else. Did I say it was hot and hilly?

Both nights I shot video of all the acts in the theater, plus the builder's BS session and Bill Pitts informal talk on his life in magic. I was especially interested to hear that Pitts had once worked a midnight spook show as "Doctor Templar." Oh, (and this is on video too) Ruth Pitts doing her beautiful rings routine and sand ending. Really lovely. They came in to support their friend Bob.

Additional highlights for me besides getting to hang out with Michael Baker at the venue and Gimpy and Mrs. Gimpy around the pool at the hotel was getting to know KyleTheGreat (and yes, he is good; and funny) and Carl Michaels and Yulia. They're a young illusion team from Myrtle Beach (Yulia is from Russia) who are full time pros. They came over to support Bob. Carl told me he came because Bob always bent over backwards to help him. Carl is very knowledgable about magic. He uses classic props and the props all have a history.

There's more and I'll get it sorted out as I go.

There's a lot of video to go through so it might take me awhile since work in the shop takes priority these days.

Yep, sometimes fun is where you find it. Tommy Jackson told me he broke Ricky Jay's Guinness card throwing record in the early 70s. I got him to meet me behind the motel this morning and throw cards at the camera. Tommy told me he was 18 when he broke the record and held it for a year.

And Tommy CAN toss cards!!!

One more and I'm done.

Here's one of Ruth Pitts doing her very classy rings and salt act. She is very elegant and carries herself on stage with the grace of a dancer. Note the beautiful table. It looks like a Thayer Special Table.

I've starting loading the video into my editor today. In about two weeks I should have the dvd ready to mail out to anybody who wants one but you'll have to send me $20 to get one. I've set up a web page to take orders for it assuming anybody wants a copy.

You were GREAT, Bob! Thanks for having us. If I hadn't just had surgery and hadn't been feeling a little like Quasimodo, I would have contributed more! As it was, it seemed like you had a pretty full slate of performers!

Everyone was fun. Some were great! You and Lucy were fantastic. Next time, we'll do an air-conditioning fund bake sale.

Too many great performances to mention them all, but I a personal highlight for me was to get another chance to see Christian and Katalina work again. What a treat to have them drop in and join us.

Of course, how many conventions have a real, live UNICORN in residence?!

Thanks again for all your hard work in putting this together for us.

The Flea Mkt will be in my rearview shortly unless Bob decides to give it a go again next year.

I spent the morning going through all the video from the Bunny Heart Theater, laying in titles, and using the banjo tune "Home Sweet Home" that Kyle and I recorded backstage Friday night to use for the theme song. Our session was interrupted by Carl Michaels who came in and needed some help unloading the world's heaviest sub-trunk.

When Bob informed me that I was in charge of The Magic Builder's Symposium right at starting time (some of Bob's fancy footwork), I turned the video camera on and headed up to the stage to see what could be pulled together. Fortunately Michael Baker, Gimpy, and Ray Witko were waiting for the event to start. We pulled a panel together and had a good time talking and answering questions from the packed house. Here's a screen grab from the dvd edit of Michael, Gimpy, Ray, and yours truly. Gimpy said he was glad I called him up because we had an electric fan on the stage!! ;)

The part of this Tabby never knew!

The event was scheduled for October 7th because we had planned a surprise birthday party at the ranch for Tabby. October 7th is his birthday.

As many of you know, we lost Tabby six months before. We miss him!

Tabman and I always had an appreciation for each other and shared parallel career paths in music, magic and business. Our little code word was "Been there". We knew what it meant. You had a hand whenever you needed it.

One of the real marks of a true professional is that the first thing offered when there is a need is himself!

You could count on the Tabman!
