You can purchase the book "The Bold and Subtle Miracles of Dr. Faust" by David Hoy.

It is contained therein.

Does anyone know how far the Hoy Book Test goes back? I've been told that it goes back to Al Koran and even before that. I'm trying to complete a bibliography.

Although Al Koran did have at least two book tests in his repertoire, I've never heard of his having used the Hoy test.

It's worth noting that very little of what's been published as Koran's is actually his. That's also true (but to a lesser degree) with David Hoy.

Having said that, although the principle on which the Hoy book test is based goes back at least as far as the late 1700s, its book test application does appear to have originated with Hoy.

This conclusion is supported by the fact that the method does not appear in the rapacious C. L. Board's tome on book tests, Mainly Mental volume two, which was published in 1950, thirteen years prior to Hoy's Bold and Subtle Methods of Dr. Faust. This strongly suggests that the idea was not established at that time, and adds credibility to the attribution to David Hoy.

I do know this is an old thread but Corinda wrote the Steps between '56 and '58 and the method for the "Hoy" test appears on page 205 - 12 lines up from the bottom.

Did Corinda get it from David Hoy?

What Corinda describes is but a single element of the Hoy test (a miscall, which Hoy certainly did not invent), applied to another end.

What Hoy did was combine this idea with several other subtleties to create an impromptu (anywhere, anytime) book test.

Since Hoy, additional subtleties have been added by others to strengthen this even further, but Hoy published the breakthrough combination.

A magazine, actually, and to a completely different purpose than the Hoy test.

Really, it's not the same thing at all, except for a small portion of the method.

Eddie Burke UK (Mr. E Enterprises) has a book out called 'The Ultimate Telephony'. There are several effects described leading up to the Ultimate Telephoney. Basically it is the book test-but done over a mobile phone

3 spectators nentally selct a word or a card.A spectator telephones someone she knows who names 3 words or 3 cards. The spectators agree the magician is right. One of the effects is called The Tossed Out Book Test. Cost is about 11 in UK money.

By the way, the Hoy book was originally published by Magic, Inc. and is still available from them for $9.95. Magic, Inc. still carries many of its early titles, such as the Al Leech books, that are worth your time and interest.
