Unfortunately, the method looks like a sure way to create a "Hand Puzzle" as well. ;)

I first learned about this puzzle from the Boy Scouts of America Handbook. There was a section on Puzzles and Tricks.

Just to piggy-back on your memory I remember Boy's Life Magazine and my brief stint in the scouts. They had a page ocassionally devoted to teaching a magic trick. It's funny because I never read the magazine, I just went straight to the back where they had mail-order magic tricks and gags for sale.
