I know this article. I shared it with Jay Marshall, Stanley Palm and some others.
He writes with a lot of candor. He's half mentor, half investigative reporter.
Houdini had Martin Beck, B.F. Keith, and William Morris (the actual William Morris) representing him at different times, and he always made his own deals.

Mr. Mullins

Wonderful article. Thank you for sharing it.

Is there a run of the Dramatic Mirror in an archive to be studied that you know of? I have a few orginal copies of the paper.

Best,

Tom Klem

Tom -- the website hosting the article I linked to has a number of issues digitized. There are physical runs at the MOMA and NYPL in New York City (check Worldcat for details).

Bill:

Thank you very much.

Did not know MOMA had a run.

I had already scheduled a visit to the NYPL Archive for other reasons.

The New York Clipper and the New York World are also good sources for study.

HEREis a stereograph of Houdini.

If you cross your eyes while looking at it until the images overlay each other, it will pop into 3-D.

The Billy Rose Theater Collection at the NYPL has a number of online photos of Houdini. HERE he is with Ching Ling Foo. Another. With Thurston. With Teddy Roosevelt (??) An early shot with Bess. In the Circus. With Kellar. A contemporary display of handcuffs and posters at the Shubert Theater. With Alexander the Conjuror.

Thanks, Bill, those shots are great. Also with him in the first Foo photo are Bess, Foo's daughter, and Theo Bamberg (Okito). "Alexander the Conjurer" is Alexander Heimburger (1819-1909), aka "Herr Alexander" who has the distinction of being mentioned in MOBY DICK (and having performed at the White House). The Roosevelt photo is "photoshopped" (whatever the equivalent of that was 100 years ago!) to crop out the other gentleman in the photo to make it look like Houdini and Teddy were buddies rather than casual shipboard acquaintances.

Bill:

These images are wonderful. Thank you for sharing them.

The Columbia University Library has a digital run of the New York Clipper.

Here is a link to the 1892 New York Clipper Annual with an ad for Prof. Otto Maurer on the Bowery. The Bowery is my focus right now.

Tom, Volker Huber reprinted an Otto Maurer catalog (circa 1880). 224 pages, lots of woodcuts. Limited to just 250 numbered copies. Available from him for 25 Euros plus shipping (I thought they were out of print, but there is an ad for them in Wittus Witt's latest Magische Welt). Email is edition-huber[AT]t-online.de

Dear Richard:

Thank you so much.

I own one and it is very helpful as the actual catalog is very fragile.

The cost of an original has always been a bit too much for me to spend.

I am a historian not a collector although many do both very well.

I have several pieces of original Maurer materials like a promotional piece with his son playing the piano.

He was part of the old school of magic like Pop Krieger.

I like the history of that time.

Best,

Tom Klem

Here is the original, now that I knew to look for it.

This is Houdini and TR's grandkids.

Try this. Apparently the Lib of Congress links aren't 100% stable.

I sm sure you have seen this article from 1916 in the NYTimes.
"Son of Rabbis" with Houdini, Al Jolson and and Irving Berlin as officers of the group.
