William Shakespeare’s The Tempest::Screen Adaptation by Julie Taymor

Discussions of new films, books, television shows, and media indirectly related to magic and magicians. For example, there may be a book on mnemonics or theatrical technique we should know or at least know about.

William Shakespeare’s The Tempest::Screen Adaptation by Julie Taymor

Postby Edward Pungot » January 5th, 2012, 7:32 am

Ive been waiting for this film to come out on DVD for the longest time. Finally saw it yesterday afternoon. Wonderfully done, and as always, the artistic vision of Julie Taymor really shines through in this screen adaptation of one of Shakespeares last few penned plays. Yes, there is plenty of magic and the supernatural in here, but more importantly, there is a synthesis of all of the playwrights best works, masterfully and intricately interwoven with a cast of characters whose inner conflicts and outer dialogues make for a real treat for lovers of Shakespeares works. This is the stuff which dreams are made of. Highly Recommended!

Is this the production with Judi Dench as Prospera?

She does kind of look like Judi Dench. It's actually Helen Mirren and she plays the original male part very powerfully.

Wasn't it Shakespeare's final play?
A very hard show to pull off. The film, as I recall, didn't get terrific reviews.

It may not be up to par with industry standards, but compared to most magic acts out there, it has more to say about the human condition than all the mediocre magic acts out there combined.

Yes, come to think of it, I believe it was his last.

? since when is a magic act supposed to offer more than a few minutes of amusing reminder how much effort we put in to model "reality" and how flawed our models can be?

True, you make a very good point. Sometimes it's best to keep things light and simple and to the point.

Jonathan, magic is supposed to offer more than that whenever the perforner deems it necessary. Have you never seen Rene Lavand?

The entertianment/entertainer can be whatever - be it evangelical or poetic - though IMHO the magic (let's stick with tricks rather than the persuasive/sentimental aspect) is what it is whether a literary device to move a story or what amounts to a punch line in a joke - as above.

I still prefer John Cassavetes' Tempest.

Looking forward to this latest take on Tempest.
So far my favorite interpretation is Forbidden Planet.
