I want to point out that 2012 is a bigger and better convention. You still get the same awesome Gala show, awesome close-up show, two contests, opening banquet, and of course THE BEACH!
For 2012 we have added a bonus 7th lecture, our Banquet show will be featuring a LAS VEGAS HEADLINER, and an extra 1-man show has been added as well. That makes 4 fully staged shows all together!!! And we are a small fraction of the price of the Big conventions that offer all of these things.

The people asked and we delivered: JEFF McBride was one of the names all of our attendees requested to see. Not only will you see Jeff perform in every arena of magic and lecture but he will be giving a dose of his Magic and Mystery School. Eugene Burger calls Jeff, "one of the most influential teachers of magic of our time." We hope you take advantage of this once in a lifetime oppurtinity training one-on-one with this master teacher of magic. Each five hour session with Jeff is never like the other, and I think anyone who has taken it can atest to that. Spots are limited so sign up soon for your guranteed slot with Jeff McBride and the Super Session. See the website for details.

In planning your convention travels for next year I hope you put Magic at the Beach on your list.... It is said to be one the new favorite conventions everyone is attending.

We have more suprises in store, keep your eyes open as we reveal what's hidden at the beach.

Best Wishes,

Matt McCoy
MATB Talent/Show Director

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:

Recent convention favorite makes his first stop in the South East. And where better than Magic At the Beach? For 2012 we will have New York Magician ASI WIND joining us.

ASI WIND-Spontaneous and unpredictable, Asi's performances are a roller-coaster for the mind. Combining a free-spirited playfulness with superb skill and a uniquely creative mind, NYC based Corporate Mentalist (mind reader) Asi Wind treats each audience to a truly memorable experience.

He is globally hailed by magicians as being one of the few performers in the world to constantly innovate, develop, and perform entirely original material. Indeed, when a magician wants to be fooled, he attends Asi's show. No surprise, then, that a committee of his peers recently presented him with the International Merlin Award for "Most Innovate Show" - an award previously given to David Copperfield, Criss Angel, and Penn & Teller.

In addition to being the headliner at New York's longest-running magic show, and the performer of choice at the city's most upscale private events, Asi is frequently asked to invent and design ideas for other magicians worldwide. He is currently one of the main advisors for David Blaine's upcoming television special - a project that, for now, remains secret.

Asi Wind was born and raised in Tel Aviv, where he was voted "Best Magician in Israel." He currently resides in New York City, and spends most of his year performing across the globe.

JEFF McBride, MIKE CAVENEY, TINA LENERT, and ASI WIND. More names to come. The biggest surprises won't even come until after December 1st so make sure to register early. Last year we had around 225 magicians come. To keep it the same, intimate atmosphere we are capping it off at 250 magicians. Once we hit our limit no more registrations will be sold. TEN international stars of magic, FIVE shows, SEVEN lectures, and one heck of a good time. Register Today!!!!

For Immediate Release:

Magic At The Beach is pleased to announce the addition of Jade to our stellar line-up.

The exotic allure of Jade's magic stems from her Chinese heritage and her childhood on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Jade took the male-dominated world of magic by storm in 1990, when she won first place in the International Brotherhood of Magicians' World Magic Competition. More importantly, a panel of celebrity judges honored her with the organization's coveted Gold Medal of Magic, a prize awarded only a handful of times in the competition's 20-year history. To date, she remains the sole woman to receive this honor.

The renown from her win propelled Jade into appearances on foreign and national television. She has performed on the stages of variety theaters in Europe and Canada; luxury cruise lines like American Hawaii and Holland America; and casino revue shows in Atlantic City, Lake Tahoe, Biloxi, and Las Vegas.

Monte Carlo 1994, the Royal Family of Monaco invited Jade to perform at the Princess Grace Theater, an honor she considers a highlight of her career. Paris 1999, France's Minister of Defense personally presented her the Golden Mandrake Award, France's most prestigious magic honor. Las Vegas 2000, the International Magicians Society recognized Jade as "Best Female Magician of the Year".

Jade's fluency in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English has proven a bonus in her travels and engagements, allowing her to exchange illusionary techniques with other master magicians throughout the globe. As Jade's repertoire and talents expand and become even more diverse, the extraordinary beauty and grace of her enchanting performances will continue to enrapture audiences around the world!

Dont miss the Beauty of magic, JADE, performing at Magic At the Beach 2012 in the Cabaret' and Champions of Magic Show!

Xavier Mortimer. I have told every convention organizer I know that to hire him will be a major coup de grace. Saw his l'hombre orchestra show in paris. (it's a play on words - shadow orchestra and one man band). Not flawless (yet) but in a few years will be a truly important act. Moments of sheer magic, often without traditional means of deception. Would be worth the trip just to see that act.

Hmmmm... "coup de grace" is "a death blow intended to end the suffering of a wounded creature." Maybe that why your entreaties have been unsuccessful?

Well, I wanted to say it was a "coup" to bring him in, but thought that meant a revolution/take over (though the turn of phrase sounded correct to my ear.) I thought, then (and apparently incorrectly) that "coup de grace" was a great thing, a triumphant achievement.

I was wrong.

What would be the right way to phrase it?

Brad,

You were right.

Coup - (say coo, not coop) is right. It really means blow as in, "strike a blow". In context it is a suprising or especially effective action. I'd leave off the quotation marks.

coup de grce - (don't say gras - that makes it fat) is blow of grace. If you're shooting your mortally wounded buddy on the battlefield to end his suffering, this is what you're delivering.

coup d'tat - (say this one like it looks) - Blow to the state. It's a military takeover of an established government.

This message brought to you courtesy of my seventh grade French teacher.

I'm leaving work now because I'm all cooped up.

Kent

You are correct Brad, it would be worth the trip just to see Xavier with all the other acts on the bill being some type of "coup", too !! Xavier's American premiere, MATB2012.

Magic at the Beach weekend in Review

Magic at the Beach 2012 is a wrap. Looking back on the flurry of activity over this past weekend Im not sure where to begin my review. I suppose at the beginning first allow me to thank the incredible staff for their hard work leading up to opening day: Dave Tanner and Roman LePree our Co-Chairmen, Melena LePree as Logistics & Hospitality, Michelle Householder in charge of Marketing & Corporate Liaison, Matt McCoy as Talent Liaison and Stage Manager for all productions and Mike Heidtman as Event Coordinator. Jeff Miller and William McLean help us every year doing anything that needs done on the fly you two are fabulous.

Registration opened on time and ran smoothly. All guests received an incredible swag bag full of products and material. Magic effects, the MATB Magazine featuring articles and effects written by all of the invited talent, a poster, bottle of MATB water and more were given away. The contents of which were almost worth the price of admission.

Buddy Farnan decorated the Main Ballroom for our Hollywood themed Welcome Reception Thursday night and it was beautiful. All of our guests walked down the Red Carpet to enter as they were met by the paparazzi and greeted by Eric Hall channeling the magnetic presence of Mandrake the Magician and Mike Heidtman on the microphone looking quite dapper in his tuxedo. A lavish dinner buffet was enjoyed by all prior to Gregory Wilson killing the room with his one man show. If you have not seen Gregory perform let me say that his wit, skill and presentation lead to infectious laughter from beginning to end. Following the reception the Dealers Room opened where a cash bar was open for the entire weekend and tables were setup for sessioning.

Friday morning started off with Stage Competitions for both Youth and Adults. Our Judges for all competitions were Obie OBrien representing the magic community, Nathan Heron who is the headline entertainer at the Carolina Opry/Good Vibrations show and Brock Santa, a professional actor, dancer and costumer currently with the Theatre of the Republic and formerly toured with Tomsoni & Co. Youth stage contest results had Jay Temaat winning First Place and Christopher Quintero taking Second Place. Adult stage contest results ended with Michael Trixx winning First Place and Steve Owens taking Second Place. Mike Caveney then presented the first lecture of the weekend and following lunch the Close-up Show was performed by Gregory Wilson, Asi Wind, Jeff McBride and Paul Gertner performing his FISM winning act. Gregory Wilson and Jeff McBride presented their lectures later that afternoon. After dinner everyone reassembled in the Main Ballroom for our in-house Cabaret Show. Jade was our MC and presented her magic along with turns by Mike Caveney, Tina Lenert, Jay Mattioli, Jeff McBride and Xavier Mortimer. Id like to add that MATB was very proud to provide Xavier his American debut. From France, Xavier is a complete package: magician, juggler and movement artist. I predict that this will be the first of many visits to the United States for this young man. Later that night Jay Mattioli presented the fourth lecture of the weekend.

Saturday morning kicked off early with the Close-up competition with Hayden Childress as Haydini taking the First Place award and Ron Conley taking home Second Place. After Paul Gertner presented the fifth lecture of the weekend the Main Ballroom was transformed into the Asi Wind Theater as Asi presented his special one man show for all of our guests. The audience gave Asi a well deserved ovation at the conclusion and one of the many positive comments overheard was, That man is not a magician, he is a true sorcerer !!. Asi then presented the sixth and final lecture of the weekend following his show.

But wait, theres more. All of the guests registered for MATB also received a premium reserved ticket for the Champions of Magic show Saturday night. The show was presented on the stage of the beautiful Gilmore Auditorium, home of the Carolina Opry. MATB guests and the people of Myrtle Beach filled the theatre and were presented with an awesome show. From the prelude laser light show to the final bow by the cast this show surpassed all expectations. Bravo indeed. After the show all MATB guests returned to the resort for the Farewell Party. Heavy hors doeuvres, beverages and a cash bar were provided while music and lights set the atmosphere. This party carried on until the wee hours of Sunday morning and yet some of the same guests that were present until the end still managed to attend the Super Session taught by Jeff McBride which began at 9:00AM. This Master Class was available for an additional fee however all who attended know that any amount of time spent with this teacher and mentor is worth twice the price.

Re-reading what I just wrote I am sure there are still things I havent mentioned and perhaps some folks I have failed to thank and yet the biggest thanks goes out to each and every one of you who came down to beautiful Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for Magic at the Beach. The MATB staff will meet soon and begin making plans for 2013. MATB is held annually in January on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday weekend. We look forward to seeing all of our old friends back and hope to meet many more new friends next year. Thank you all once again for making Magic at the Beach so special.
