Genii Nov. 2011 Missing

Postby Frank Lehmann » October 31st, 2011, 8:53 pm

The latest issue of iGenii (Nov. 2011) is not appearing on my iPad (iOS5 on an iPad2) as a download, as earlier issues have. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks,
Frank Lehmann

It's not something that needs to be fixed.

Leave the app open and after a time you should see a whirring circle near the lines at the outer left corner which show the strength of your wi-fi signal. The app automatically updates itself and after a while the new issue will appear on the screen. Then you can download it.

If the app doesn't refresh itself, then quit the app, turn off your iPad. Turn it back on and tap the app again. The new issue should show up.

Richard,

Thank you. Restarting the iPad (something I forget to regularly do) did the trick.

Restarting (rebooting) is something that PC folks seem to know, and something that Mac folks seem to ignore. Most Mac folks just put their devices to sleep and that's not good. Restarting your device regularly helps it clean itself up.

Sorry, but that is utter codswallop.

Well, codswallop works very well.

If an app has an issue, resetting an iOS device can sometimes fix it. The part that was codswallop, which is why I quoted that specific part, is that restarting osx or iOS devices regularly helps it clean itself up.

Sorry for the confusion.

Actually there is a difference between restarting your iPad and restarting just a single app. Very few people seem to know this. I'm betting Damian is one of them.

Well I'm sure you'd have lots of links at your fingertips to explain why iOS needs rebooting then?

Restarting OS X DOESN'T help "clean it up". This is a UNIX operating system and is designed to be left on FOR YEARS. It's one of the benefits of going UNIX/Linux.

However, the "genius" at the Apple store told me that it is good SOP to restart your iOS devices every once in a while since it CAN get bogged down with artifacts from running the various apps.

How often is "every once in a while"? I was told once a week/month. Whatever. Makes me wonder about THAT advice, too. ;-)

If you are wallowing in codswollop, and installing more codswollop - it's not the OS's fault that it gets bogged down.

Go ahead and load UBUNTU. Poorly behaved applications will still bog down then lock up an OS ;)

Genii November 2011 is still missing from my mailbox. How do I reset that?

Do you mean the paper issue? If so, no resetting required: just patience.

Yes, the paper issue has not arrived yet. I just sent an email asking how long I should wait before purchasing a replacement in case it never comes. Perhaps a postal employee saw the free dvd and... no, that would never happen.

We do replace missing issues, but not until the 20th of the dated month.
