The illustrations of Ed Mishell

Postby Willrogan » September 22nd, 2011, 8:46 pm

I am trying to track down original illustrations of Ed Mishell.
Is anyone here able to help steer me in the right direction.
With respect and gratitude,
Will Rogan

They are pretty hard to find. I had one, but gave it to Earle Oakes as a gift. Saw it in his studio the other day. It will come up for sale at some point.

At one time, Richard Bloch had a bunch of them as he bought the estate of Ed. I may have couple here if I look around hard enough.
Is there any particular illustration you are looking for?

My name is Richard Mishell, and Ed Mishell was my father.

Most of his drawings were done for Lou Tannen, and my dad always complained that Tannen never returned any of his original artwork. I am not now a magician -- I only perform one trick, the coin through the table trick where the salt shaker disappears -- so I don't know if Tannen's successor, Tony Spina, is still in business, or even still alive, for that matter. This is all the information I have.

Tony Spina sold Tannen's years ago. They kept none of Ed Mishell's drawings that I know of. Any they did have would have been destroyed in the fire at 1540 Broadway.

He did some original artwork for me at one point. Not sure where it is now but if I find it, you are welcome to have it.

In around 1957 my friend took me to Tannen's on 42nd Street and Ed Mishell ran over to us and introduced himself, asking what we were looking for. I was petrified. We ambled over to the counter where Lou Tannen was holding court. I'll never forget that day.
