Deluxe edition in NH today, 'tis beautiful. One small crumple on the slipcase because of the webbing being too tight, but I'm not letting it go now that it's finally here...

Re: New Book Coming on the Card Magic of David Berglas
The deluxe editions, and all copies of the regular edition ordered after May 25th, have been sent by a better service of mail--the service that my printer SHOULD have used when sending out all the books on May 27th. That is why people who've ordered the books later have started to receive them sooner. Read the apology letter from my printer earlier in this thread.

Re: New Book Coming on the Card Magic of David Berglas
There are lots of people, including some in the US, who still have not received the books mailed on May 27th. The printer sent them in a way that does not prioritize their delivery. And there is no reason to believe that all the books which haven't arrived yet are lost.
Please be patient, your books are on the way.

I received a regular edition of the book today, here in Calgary, Canada. Apparently it was shipped to me by DHL. The commercial invoice was dated 6/28/2011 and the contents were described as "Kaufman Book - Trackable Replacement Copies" whatever that means.

My collector's edition arrived yesterday, but I can't bring myself to open it.
Maybe I'll keep it virgin and spring for the regular edition to study.

Re: New Book Coming on the Card Magic of David Berglas
So we seem to have a forum about 'getting' a book but has anyone actually read it ? Maybe even studied it?
And maybe, be in the position to comment on it?
I'd love to hear some unbiased reviews?
What do you think?

Re: New Book Coming on the Card Magic of David Berglas
There are some reviews up on the thread in The Magic Cafe, but I advise you to avoid the mental diarrhea from Mark Lewis that has flooded the thread. Why Steve Brooks is allowing that vicious little troll to hijack the thread is a mystery to me--maybe he thinks it's funny. But you can read good comments from everyone who has received the book, and lots of dumb comments from a few who haven't!

I think reviewing the book should be left to someone far more knowledgeable than me. I have read and studied about two hundred pages though.
The text is seminal to anyone interested in memory techniques, as they apply to locating a card within a deck. I found the information more practical and satisfying than Mnemonica. The depth of focus on a few effects (as compared to the large number of effects in the Tamariz books) aroused in me, more mental gyrations.
I suspect having read and studied the Master Tamariz' book for some time dulled me to its wonder. The books are equally entrancing. I would say portions of The Berglas Effects is a post-graduate course in mem-deck work. Either text is equally dense.
I've been fascinated with a Simon Aronson effect from his earliest work on stacks. Someone names a card, the spectator chooses one from an actual deck the magician has been shuffling. Lo and behold, the thought of card is the one chosen.
I've been doing this effect for about five years. It has a lousy effect on magicians. Joke 'em. Laymen have given me extraordinary reactions. It takes selling the effect but they simply cannot work it backwards.
Reading The Berglas Effects broke new ground for me. It's given me new tools to make my performance of one of my very favorite card tricks a great deal better.
Who could ask for more from a magic book. The thinking is so deep in that book, the conceits so very clever, if it hits you, like the book hit me, it will change the way you do magic.
Some won't like it. Some will revel in the possibilities. An even smaller subset will produce offshoots and subtleties from a a master's work.

Finally! Mine arrived in Gllivare (Sweden in Scandinavia) this afternoon.
Re: New Book Coming on the Card Magic of David Berglas
Thanks Richard.
The trouble with the cafe is you have to sift through so much c*** to find the information you need. I have never understood how posters are unable to post in the same thread instead of starting new ones. A Google search within the cafe for "The Berglass Effects" brings up about 5,520 results!
Anyway, the book seems to be receiving very favorable reviews so I guess I'll have to buy it and see for myself what all the fuss is about.
Thank you Kent for your interesting views on the book.
I too am very interested in Simon Aronsons' work with the stacked deck, 'Bound to Please' is one of my favorite books.
I'm looking forward now to studying 'The Berglas Effects'.
Regards Alex

Re: New Book Coming on the Card Magic of David Berglas
My book just arrived here in the UK. Exactly three weeks after my credit card was charged. So - it seems the books are taking about three weeks to come over to the UK.
Anyway - those looking for a useful (online) review should check out a post by Justin Longshore. It is 19th from the top in the following LINK.
I look forward to discussing this book here sometime soon.
Thanks once again to Richard and David for all their efforts.

Arrived in Seattle this afternoon. Truly beautiful!
Re: New Book Coming on the Card Magic of David Berglas
I was one of those trying to post a serious review on the Cafe, and complained to the moderators about Lewis, but was politely rebuffed. The thread got totally sidetracked such that most of the posts involved either: 1) delivery times, or 2) trying to ascertain the Berglas Effect without having to purchase the book. That being said, and having read Mr. Gunn's fine post above, I'd like to say that the book contains much more than memorized deck work, if that is the impression you've received. There are so many different ideas that a card worker can take away from this book, including verbal control of a spectator, observing visual cues, misdirection, but so much more. Well-written and clearly illustrated. The DVDs are excellent illustrations and show very well what has been taught in the book. Surprises you as to what you (or at least David Berglas)can get away with.
To me, this book is not for newcomers to card magic. What is being taught, though not requiring sophisticated sleight of hand (as correctly stated in the Reviews of Genii and MUM), will not be easy to master for the reasons stated in those reviews. But not impossible, and I'm very much looking forward to incorporating many of the techniques to my magic. You don't have to do the Berglas Effect to get a lot out of this book.

I am deeply into the book, reading everything in order, slowly, taking the time to practice ;) It's a wonderful book, thanks for everything Richard and David. I also liked the Peer Gynt parallel :)
The DVDs are also wonderful, first class, very useful to learn and train.

Back from Holiday in Venice and the Berglas Effects was in the Mail (Germany). Thanks to Richard and David for a great Book! Tomorrow I will start with DVD 2. :-)
Re: New Book Coming on the Card Magic of David Berglas
Thank YOU, Richard, for seeing this book through. It is very different from any other book I've read, in the way you've weaved the anecdotes of his perorming the Berglas Effect or other effects into the methodology. Seeing how and why even you and other well infromed magicians were fooled makes it that much more powerful and inspiring. One aspect I wished was explained a little more was in the methods related to the Spectator Viewing From a Spread, or While Spreading the Cards. Without exposing, it is a little difficult to explain my issue, but while I understand generally what I need to do, it seemed a little bit sparse in detail regarding what exactly to be looking for. Seems it would take me a lot and lot of misses until I was reasonably good at it. Somthing for me to work towards.

Re: New Book Coming on the Card Magic of David Berglas
As far as doing Think a Card from a Spread, you will be shocked how easy it is to do, to pick up cues, particularly if you pay close attention to the way in which the patter is described. I was terrified the first time I tried it, but it worked with no problem. Of course, you do have to be able to get to the card another way if you miss completely.

Re: New Book Coming on the Card Magic of David Berglas
I would suggest learning Think a Card with a Fan first. It's easier, and it also gives you an out. If you can't get any clues when the person spreads the cards, you can always take the deck back and fan it, then hold it up for the spectator and say, "Are you sure you actually saw the card?" The person's eyes will go right to it.
Also, if you are working with a set-up deck when doing these things, you have a great tool to help you because you will always know how far away you are in your cut.

Richard, prior to writing the book with David, had you done much memorized deck work? How about since then?

Arrived in Malaysia on Saturday. Looks good, but I probably won't be able to get to it until August as I am starting a period of extensive travel - Definitely not a book that you can stick in the bag to read on a trip with the current weight restrictions.
