Guys,
Where was the first published description of second dealing a card from a face up deck while lapping the original top card?
Thanks in advance,
Tom

Re: Second deal lapping?
I "Asked Alexander" and here are the references he told me.
The Second Deal Lap [done face-up] is explained within "Bust Out! by Gene Maze in Afterthoughts by Harry Lorayne (1975)
Within the "S.D.L. Change" by Gene Maze in CardMagic by Richard Kaufman (1979) states "I'd be less than honest if I pretended to know who invented the Second Deal Lap. It's a terrific sleight that seems to belong to a number of peopletheir names are too numerous to mention and I won't, however, here are a few initials: P.D., J.W.S., H.S., etc.

I think Gene Maze might have been the first to publish it, but he wasn't sure it was his. We heard a rumor that it might have been Persi's, but we were never able to get that confirmed.

I can verify that the SDL was created by Persi Diaconis.

Any estimated date for its creation?Meir Yedid wrote:I can verify that the SDL was created by Persi Diaconis.

Meir,
Yes, do tell! When did Mr. Diaconis create the technique and where did he first describe it?
Thanks

Re: Second deal lapping?
Is this the thing where you kind if necktie the pack during the deal from a face up pack and plonk the card face down, then show the face of the pack again?
Going back to the Governer days in NYC I recall this from a student exercise where you show the four aces and deal them face down to later reveal the four Kings, setup with a,k,a,k,a,k,a,k at the face and great practice for double pushoffs or second deals.

You necktie the deck, the top/face card is dealt directly into your lap, and you take off the new top/face card and deal it onto the table, turning your right hand palm down as you deal.

Re: Second deal lapping?
Meir, would you let us know how you know this is Persi's work?
Thanks Richard,
Yes that's the item. It seemed familiar to the group, from Russel Barnhardt to Gene Maze who had different takes on the elbow/wrist action - varying from a Slydini type gesture to a tight turn where the focus shifts to the card apparently dealt getting ponked to the table. I almost wish I was more into cards back then. The table with those guys, from Harry to Lenny was always explroring something - and like Tidal Wave - it sometimes made it into Harry's magazine later.
In this case I believe it was Geoff who showed me the item in use and then suggested it as an exercise to find direct and indirect applications as motivation for the practice required to do it well.
:)

Re: Second deal lapping?
I dont believe he ever published the move and I do not know when he invented it.
All I know is that in the very late 70s or very early 80s I showed him a routine using the SDL and he told me that the move was his and he was not happy that it got out. He then demonstrated it for me and it was obvious that he was doing it better than anyone else I have ever seen perform it. I have no reason to doubt that it is his.
