For Sale - 74 Magic Books (Unlisted and on Amazon)

Postby Steve Ball » June 13th, 2011, 10:24 pm

I was going to post 92 books, but 18 got snapped up before I had a chance to list them here. I have several dozen books that I have chosen to NOT list on Amazon. Reasons: (1) the prices are too low, and/or (2) the Sales Ranks are too high (meaning they don't sell well there) to bother with. Finally, (3) some of them simply do not have Product Pages on Amazon, therefore they cannot be listed. Some of these books are fairly scarce. But the prices I've set for them are, I believe, lower than other Internet listings for the same titles (without shipping!). The formula I used was:

(LOWEST Internet price found
PLUS
$3.99 for S&H (Amazon's S&H charge))
The total of these amounts DIVIDED BY 2.

When I could not find any copies the price is a WAG.

These prices do NOT include shipping. Shipping is at my COST.

Payment via paypal (ID = booknookoc@earthlink.net)

Also included are 17 Amazon listings. Usually the same price formula.

Here are the remaining titles. Pleae email me at booknookoc@earthlink.net if you ahve any questions regarding condition or whatever:

Re: For Sale - 74 Magic Books (Unlisted and on Amazon)

Postby Steve Ball » June 13th, 2011, 10:27 pm

PS: I'm taking all these books to a magician's monthly meeting on Wednesday night, so if you have any interest in these, you should act before Wednesday at, say 2 or 3PM to insure that the book(s) you want are going to be available.

Also, I will be at the doctor's office Tuesday most of the day, so I will not be able, probably, to access email. You can call me at (714) 337-7932.

Thanks,

Steve Ball

First edition of my book, CLOSE-UP CARD MAGIC, is 1962. So, what you're selling here IS ABSOLUTELY NOT A FIRST EDITION. HL.

Thanks. That info was taken from Amazon, here:

Close-up card magic

so that Product Page obviously needs to be fixed, using the Update Product Info link, here:

Update Product Info

However, I'm not sure *I* can do that, since Amazon requires proof. I'll try, but you might want to go to that URL and set them straight with, perhaps, a publisher link??

Going now to try and change it on Amazon. (Problem is, I suspect that some or all of the sellers will also be saying it is a first edition....)

This can be a common problem on Amazon; there are lots of newbie sellers.

Aha! The Amazon Product Page is wrong, but my listing saying it is a First Edition is correct. Jut looked at the book and it says "First Edition THIRD PRINTING" on the Title Page under your name. The date I show, 1976, is indeed wrong. The date should be October 1962, as you say.

So it is possible I have it listed on the wrong Product Page, but that is another issue....

I can't edit that post now. Is there any way for the mods to change that date?

Re: For Sale - 74 Magic Books (Unlisted and on Amazon)

Postby Andres Reynoso » June 15th, 2011, 12:31 pm

Hi Steve.

First edition means it haven't updatated. It continues being the original text. When an author corrects, adds o modifies some book (updating it) then is the second edition (or third or fourth). Maybe the layout changes, maybe the index, maybe some ortography was corrected, maybe some paragraphs added.
When a "print" is soldout and the editorial produce more,it continues being the first edition but now is the second print. When the second run is soldout, it comes the third print.
If your copy form "close up card magic" is 1st ed 3rd prnt from 1972, it means the original is from 1962 and when all copies were soldout, Tannen run more copies in 1972 (3rd prnt)but there havn't been modified since 1962.
Your book really is from 1972.
For a person, like me, that is interested in the tricks no matters if is from 1962, 1972, 1980 or even ebook or Classic Collection bound, but for serious collectors a 1st ed 1st print form 1962 is more valuable than a 3rd print from 1972.

I'm a lousy computer person, Steve, so there's no way I can have Amazon change anything. Truthfully, I don't really care, doesn't really change much - it's just that I think magicians should know the facts, and I guess it's my ego involved. I wrote MUCH better in 1976 than I did in 1962!! Best - Harry L.

You are correct regarding causes of editions and printings, and that - for collectors - a 1st is generally better than a later edition. (Completists, however, generally want copies of ALL editions and even sometimes printings!)

The error was a careless one on my part, caused by time constraints. I maintain my own Excel database, and save typing time by populating the fields by copy/pasting the Amazon information on what appears to be the relevant title page. In this case, I saw the "First Edition" info on the page, but the incorrect 1976 date didn't register, and the wrong date info got included on the internal database.

As restted: this is the 1962 1st edition 3rd printing.

Well, I skimmed quite a bit of that book, and it seems to me that you wrote just fine in 1962! :)

Ron MacMillan's Symphony of the Spheres: Manipulative Magic Routines With Billiard Balls [Paperback]
Lewis Ganson

B004KDRMTA
23 pages, 9 inches tall. From the private reference collection of the Estate of S. Harris Dalrymple. Mr. Dalrymple ("Dalrymple the Magician") was a Senior Computer Engineer at McDonnell Douglas Astronautics and an accomplished amateur stage magician. Glossy pictorial wraps w/ stapled spine. Very Good, straight & tight, clean & bright trade paperback w/ no text marks, bumps, creases or excessive wear (very slight shelfwear; light corner wear; very clean though lightly age-creamed textblock edges; spine staples dulled but tight w/ no rust; inked owner name on Title-Page; small copyright label for "The Supreme Magic Company" glued over original publisher data on Title Page; interior crisp and clean w/ no marks). Product Description: At the Annual Convention of the International Brotherhood of Magicians (British Ring) at Scarborough in 1957, an unknown magician walked away with the First Prize - The British Ring Shield. The manipulative act which caused so much enthusiastic comment featured Billiard Balls, and even well posted magicians in the audience were at a loss to know from where several of the balls were produced. Here was something new in manipulative magic, and there was much speculation as to the means whereby balls could be "stolen" so cleanly, without a hint being given of their original secret location, or of the method by which they were obtained. Here in this ebook you can read about the techniques and methods of this legendary performer. The performer, Ron MacMillan, rapidly gained an international reputation. His first big show in London was again before an audience of magicians at the Victoria Hall, in one of the Unique Shows sponsored by Harry Stanley. His fame continued to spread, and he became much in demand in France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Italy, Sweden, etc. Other honors won include Second Prize (beaten by a short head by Fred Kaps) for the Premier Award at the International World Congress at Leige in 1961, and First Prize at the Scandinavian Congress in 1963.
