Antinomy Number 15 Arrives

Postby Sam Kesler » April 25th, 2011, 9:08 pm

My Monday was brightened by issue #15 of Antinomy landing in my mail box. The sad news is that this is the next to the last issue. The final issue should be out at the end of the year.

Too bad it's stopping.

I'm amazed how Karl Fulves has managed to keep his periodicals going for so long: I just received Prolix No.8 in the mail a few days ago.

Considering that #14 was in October 2008, I never expected to see #15, so this was a nice surprise indeed.

Richard, sorry to get off topic, but how is the material in Prolix? As Mr. Fulves' material is always good, perhaps I should ask what kind of card stuff? Is it similar to material in Pallbearers and Chronicle, or more effect themes?

Prolix is good. It's kind of a dinosaur in that there is nothing else like it anymore, and it maintains a consistent level and tone that Fulves has been producing for about 40 years. I don't have time to try the material, but it's always interesting to skim through. If not for Fulves, then the era of the small trick newsletter/magazine that started with The Jinx would have died long ago.

I haven't gotten mine yet (I live closer to Mr. Taylor than Mr. Kesler does I think). Has anyone else besides Sam gotten theirs yet?

In fact, most of issue #15 is Racherbaumer and Swiss, based on a quick review of the table of contents. I haven't started reading it yet.

Gordon: Did my Taylor publish any new contact information for him in Antimony #15. I've been unable to reach him via his old email. Thanks!

Gene Taylor is now the stand-up guy of the year. A fine issue with much JR (Marlo, Steve Reynolds) content, tricks from Aaron DeLong, Harapan Santoso Ong, Max Nelson, Donny Orbit, and Jeff Prace. The analysis and discussion of "Etiquette" by Mr. Swiss should be required reading for all of us.

Not to sound ungrateful, but he'll be even more stand-up if issue #16 materializes and finishes the obligation to subscribers who paid in advance, year ago.

But yes, it's great to see #15 arrive.

It took me a long time to get the last few issues of Richard's Almanac out, and also to get the last issue of Looking Glass done. The problem is always the same: you get a little bit behind, then more behind, and the money from the subscribers is long gone and you have a big printing and postage bill to pay.

I'll be happy to give Gene more time to do it since he has good intentions.

I don't think his contact info has changed. The website is still http://antinomymagic.com/

Hi, Gordon:
Thanks!

I just received an email from Mr. Taylor. He says that #15 is being sent out to current subscribers in stages. I haven't received mine yet, but I'm in the shipping pipeline--sounds like a great issue!

Just received Issue 15 a couple of days ago. Kudos to Mr. Taylor--same great quality both in material and production values.

The essay by JIS should be read by everyone who is planning on watching another magician perform in person.

Sounds good - maybe they (or JIS) shares that sentiment and will post the essay so it might have a larger effect.

Jonathan, the whole point of printing an essay in a magazine is so that people will BUY THE MAGAZINE! What are you thinking?

I was simply taking e* at his opinion.
Something about the word "should".
That also brought to mind my second to least favorite oft posted phrase about "worth more than" when used about an item obtained.
Then something about opinons.

With any luck the context and the phrase "watching another magician perform" will unlink and lunch will settle.

Thanks for asking,

J

Well, erdnasephile's implicit suggestion was that people buy the damn magazine, not that the essay should be posted for free on the internet!

I'll make it explicit: I suggest that if you love close up magic and thoughtful commentary, please consider buying Antinomy--it's a quality publication, and I'm sad to see it go.

I'm also sad to see it go. My copy of #15 arrived recently and it was fantastic. Racherbaumer contributes another prolific article on card magic, and Swiss's essay on etiquette should be required reading for everybody--no exceptions. Except Max Maven.

Try nagging Gene by e-mail. It worked for me.
