Boris Karloff - Grip of The Strangler (In the US: The Haunted Strangler)

Discussions of new films, books, television shows, and media indirectly related to magic and magicians. For example, there may be a book on mnemonics or theatrical technique we should know or at least know about.

Boris Karloff - Grip of The Strangler (In the US: The Haunted Strangler)

Postby Paul Gordon » January 28th, 2011, 1:59 am

Any horror fans recall this great 1958 British movie? It's one of my favs. Very atmospheric. I first saw it in 1970 and then spent 1971 hiding under the sofa! Well, if you too are a fan - you might like to know it's being re-released with 17 mins of extra footage that was cut by the censor. I'll send detail when I have it.

Paul, this is a great flick for Karloff fans. Even though made in England in the late 1950s, everyone carries on as if it's a 1930s Universal horror film. I have the film on DVD (can't recall if it's from the UK or US), but have never heard of 17 minutes being cut out!

Just a note: the box cover you show is the DVD that's been on sale for several years--not a new release or uncut version.

Hi Richard. Yes, the box is an old one; but the only one I could find a pic of. The UK censor cut MANY films of the 50's to 1970...and many are being rebuilt as it were! More news later...

Loved Karloff movies. Every time I see a commercial for Hoarders or some other show that portrays people of questionable mental status, I think of the movie Bedlam and how the mentally ill were "displayed".

This is the movie where due to budget restrictions there was no make-up to create Karloff's transformation into the monster.

So Karloff supposedly asked if he could take a shot at it using only his acting skills. He removed his dental partial, messed up his hair and contorted his body and face creating a monster.

I think it's one of his best performances.

I have the Criterion release of this and I always thought it was complete at 79 minutes.

The Criterion release was stupidly overpriced so I never bought it. Have it on laser disc. :)
