A possibility in the market for books long past copyright

Postby Jonathan Townsend » December 7th, 2010, 9:40 am

Many of our useful references are long out of protection by copyright - and so have been republished and ebooked and generally propagated into the mass market. That is both to our benefit as regards beginner students and our detriment as the number of novel practical methods that come into use in a decade is far less than the number of such methods which are set into print and described in detail by way of these older books - never mind the base semi-exposure of indiscriminate use of online resources including YouTube.

However, should such a book be annotated and include additional content - this new work would fall under copyright protection. Consider the utility of Expert Card Technique that is properly credited and contains sufficient historical data and technical demonstrations to permit today's students to learn the material as it was in use at the time of the works original writing. This would serve our historical record and permit those who are specialists in the matter of historical attributions to get their work recognized and those who have taken the trouble to fill in the missing (or incorrect) explanatory data to get their kudos as well.

What such a practice of regular update would provide is both works protected by copyright and kept relatively up to date as regards matters of historical provenance and context.

For the record, this came to me in considering that under ISO each document has an author and review date and the company has a procedure for the regular review of documents and keeps records of that process.

What do you think?

Yes, it sounds like a good idea.

You've often floated this idea of a properly credited edition of Expert Card Technique. Why don't YOU do it?

Jim,

I have answered that question at least twice before on this BBS.

I was not an intimate of Charlier Miller, Dai Vernon or rest of the group whose works were observed and then transcribed by Braue and Huggard. As such I am not in a position to fill in what's missing and get the names right where they belong.

Any thoughts on the matter of regular document review and annotation to help keep our works in historical context and under copyright protection?

I was born more than 40 years after Leipzig died. That's not stopping me. If you think there's something that needs to be done, why wait for someone else to take the initiative?

Review & annotation is a good idea -- there just needs to be people willing to do it. Ultimately, that's going to be a labor of love for whoever is involved.

Love does not get the facts right and verified from the witnesses. Gotta start with the people. I am not one of the people who can offer witness in that particular matter. For now, I have no need to create historical fiction as described by the works of Borges. I can see that on YouTube as some perform Shakespeare in the original Klingon.

Now why is this discussion happening on posts in a BBS instead of email? What do you expect when you make a matter of personal principles public without prior consent?

I wish you the best with the Leipzig research and look forward to seeing your project published and appreciated.

Best wishes,

Jon

"Love does not get the facts right and verified form the witnesses."

Nope. That's the labor part.

Hmmm - in my present mood and opinion of some in this community - it's tempting. But I'd rather wait till I'm in a good mood and do the interviewing discussed elsewhere. Those who wish to get the ECT stuff settled will - or not.

Since the topic has been derailed already - anyone else see that illustration opposite the title page in More Magic as almost androgynous?
