Fire aboard David Sandy's "Magic Cruise"

Postby David Oliver » November 8th, 2010, 7:03 pm

Everyone is OK. According to news reports, there was a substantial fire in the engine room today, but it has been extinguished. Although, the damage was bad enough that they have had to cancel the remainder of the cruise and return to port. I'm sure more details and stories will emerge as our friends return. Wishing them a safe return.

Ditto on the safe return: That is the worst thing--short of sinking--that can happen aboard a ship. (Next time, I bet some of those regulars don't skip the fire drills as usual!)

Dustin - First cruise I was on, the captain and the fire marshall forbid me from using any fire. Apparently, the magician onboard just before me, had been screwing around and set off some smoke detectors while using flash cotton and flash paper in the wrong area. They had to evacuate an area of the ship and were not pleased about it. So, on my first day, before I even unpacked, I was called into the captains quarters for a meeting. "You're the new magician? NO FIRE!"

Dodd - Just happened to have the info, and happened to triple-check it, and happened to post it, before you. No contest. 8-)

According to CNN, the ship is waiting on the arrival of tugboats to tow it to Ensenada, Mexico (a 24 hour tow...), with no AC...
Maybe a book will come out of all the sessioning on deck... "Brainstorm in Baja"... It kinda reminds me of my favorite Magician joke...

A young magician started to work on a cruise ship with his pet parrot. The parrot would always give away the tricks saying things like, "he has a card up his sleeve" or "he has a dove in his pocket."

One day the ship sank and the magician and the parrot found themselves alone on a lifeboat. For a couple of days, they just sat there looking at each other. Finally, the parrot broke the silence and said, "Okay, I give up. What did you do with the ship?"

Reports are now that the US Ronald Reagan (aircraft carrier) is on its way to take the ship in tow. I suspect--but do not know for sure--that they will be able to provide power to the cruise ship (via an umbilical). The ship has zero power right now; no hot water, no hot food. They can't even flush toilets.

Just heard that "some services" have been restored and another which says that the toilets are now working. That has to be a relief (and I'm not making a pun or joke). And the Ronald Reagan is bringing 70,000 pounds of supplies. They expect to be ashore by tomorrow morning. Where is unclear. Reports say Ensenada, but that was when it was just the Mexican tugs that are with the ship. All that matters at this point is SAFE HARBOR!

This is doubly surprising since the ship is quite new...put into service in 2008, if I recall correctly.

When I was working for Sitmar Cruises several decades ago the ship's generator went out which meant no air conditioning. In a matter of seconds a luxury cruise liner turned into a large steel sauna. The passengers had to sleep on deck that night because it was just too hot below decks.

This can't be pleasant for our friends on the cruise.

Ensenada has a large port, shipbuilding, etc. And some very nice places to eat. Used to go there 2-3 times a year, but quit crossing the Southern border when the drug lords took over.
Stay tooned.

According to David Sandy's website... booked on that cruise, so presumably on the ship now are among many others:

Rich Bloch, Stan Allen, Kalin and Jinger, Bob Sheets, Shoot Ogawa, Christopher Hart, Martin Lewis, Danny Cole, Chipper Lowell, Chad Long and of course David Sandy. I'm sure we have countless other friends on board.

Theyve tightened up security on the news coming out of the area (maybe because the US Navy is on the scene). Apparently everyone is required to stay on the weather decks. Yuk. Uncomfortable (per Carnivals CEO) is an understatement. Sounds like an opportunity for magicians to help with the strain by entertaining their fellow passengers. The stories might be very interesting once everyone gets to where they can reconnect with the world.

Its a good thing Im too broke to have gone. I would have run around screaming Were doomed!!! Were doomed!!!

Change in plan, according to the latest reports:

The ship was moving again Tuesday night after the first of several Mexican tugboats en-route to the stricken liner began pulling it toward San Diego, where it was expected to arrive Thursday night, Carnival Cruise Lines said in a statement.

The tugboats were originally set to take the Splendor to the Mexican coastal city of Ensenada, but the cruise line changed its plans and will attempt to have it towed to San Diego, where hotel and flight arrangements would await the passengers, Carnival said.

If the process moves too slowly, it may still be taken to Ensenada, the statement said.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Kevin Metcalf said the tugs and a Coast Guard cutter escort would have to move slowly because the ship is so big.

Did you hear what some of those supplies were? Food rations included canned crab, croissants, Pop Tarts, and Spam.

Yum!!!

Dustin , that's a great site.

Another I like to point people towards when they feel like taking on cruise ships as a market is this one

http://www.oceanweather.com/data/

You can see the wave height wind speed, temp etc for any point.
Can be rather exciting : (

NCMarsh says: [i]NPR's top-of-the-hour news just said that the ship had entered cell range... [I]

I had a voicemail from David Sandy this am. It was from the ship's phone as he indicated that they do not have any way to charge their other devices and his cell is dead.

Looking at Dustin's post again today, it appears that they are almost to San Diego and that they are being escorted by the Coast Guard and a pilot boat.

According to Chad Long's facebook, the beginning of the trip didn't start out stellar either:

Nov 7 - 7:18pm "Supposed to leave in about 15 minutes, and a big cart, full of luggage, just fell in the water. http://twitpic.com/34wth9"

Nov 7 - 7:22pm " They're trying to fish out all of the bags now. Gonna be some angry passengers. Of course, my bag hasn't shown up yet. Hmm..."

Thanks to Joe Turner for sending this my way as well:

From Yahoo:

Seth Grabel, 28, a Las Vegas magician, waited for his parents, who were on the cruise with hundreds of magicians participating in a convention put on by David Sandy Productions of St. Joseph, Mo.
"My dad is an amateur magician, but my mom hates magic. She was fighting this tooth and nail. She did not want to go on this thing. She had an intuition. I don't think my dad's going to live down this one," Grabel said.

I was surprised that the estimated number of magicians was so low ("at least 100"). A dozen of that number would have been booked as talent.

Now that everyone is safe, the jokes are flying:

Somali Pirates Refuse to Board Carnival Cruise Ships
Cite Unsafe Working Conditions

MOGADISHU (The Borowitz Report) In yet another public relations setback for the beleaguered cruise ship company, Somali pirates today said they would no longer board Carnival Cruise ships, citing unsafe working conditions.

If Carnival thinks that its going to be business as usual between them and the Somali pirates, they need to have their heads examined, said Somali pirate spokesman Sugule. We Somali pirates may be bold, but were not crazy.

Well, it's not much, but Comcast.net News reported:

"Gary Grabel of Los Angeles said he was packing his bags.

'We're looking forward to spending a couple of days in San Diego to kind of catch up on my vacation,' he said by cell phone.

"He was among 250 magicians on board for a conference who performed for the guests after the power failed.

"'I did magic for hours,' he said."

By now, all of us have probably gotten off the ship and are checking into our hotels. I'm now enjoying my first hot meal.... Mmmmm... Bacon.

There should be plenty of stories with the magician angle. I know that various members of Stan Allens family were interviewed by multiple agencies, and one of the morning shows may be doing an interview tomorrow.

David Sandy was a a real trooper and kept the convention going as best as he could, getting most of the lectures in, close up show, and rallying a group for doing strolling magic on the fifth deck last night (most appreciative audience ever!)

I think the crew did an outstanding job given the situation. The cruise director was excellent at giving us updates while interjecting just enough humor to keep spirits up.

And for what could have easily turned into a Lord of the Flies, the passengers kept great attitudes, and were making the best of it.

It was an experience, and actually had fun, but it'll be good to be home.

I wish I had time to write more, but I am preparing for the show to be held here at the San Diego Marriott tonight now that we're off the ship. This show will feature Rich Bloch, Christopher Hart, Chipper Lowell, Danny Cole, Shoot Ogawa, Stan Allen, Terry Lunceford and several other San Diego area magicians.

I will have more stories and updates about the cruise experience itself later... but I need to catch my breath and get through the next 24-48 hours or so. There's still a lot to do to insure everyone gets home safely.

Many, many thanks to all of the magicians who participated! You were outstanding beyond belief!!!

Best,

David Sandy

Who were on the ship from the Magic Castle, including not only magicians, but also their assistants?

I know they are all safe and back on land. Matt Patton said he was taking a shower . . . I don't know if he was alone:)

Dale Hindman was also on board.

Happy birthday to Mark.
