My take on this close up effect.

Very entertaining. And so true about being a kid, saving your money, and a piece of you dying when you opened the package. Hope you have more friends now.

So true, so true. Very entertaining. I liked the part where the giant coke bottle comes out. Sad thing is some of those tricks are still for sale, waiting for their next victim to buy them.

Dude, everything I've seen you do is highly entertaining. You're just a fun guy to watch.

Loved all the variations you had. Good stuff!!!

Master Payne, do you perform this routine for real audiences, or is it just something for magicians? I think the experience of being ripped off from an overhyped ad is universal, at least in the U.S. But even given that, there's a lot to get across before the lay audience will fully appreciate the humor here, IMHO.

I have performed it twice in front of so-called Lay Audiences and it has played well. The video is only the fifth or sixth time I've performed it as it really doesn't fit in my usual repertoire. I created it because I came across the giant Coke Bottle and it just spoke to me.
I'd love to have a venue to perform it regularly to get all the kinks worked out and have the patter refined. Perhaps I should send the video to the Castle so as to work the Close up room for a week. Not that they'd ever book a single trick set :)

Change "magic catalog" to "back of a comic book" and you've sucked in all the laypeople.

Caught this on Facebook the other day. Top notch, Payne. Funny as hell.

I don't know about the Close-Up Gallery, but Whit Haydn's set during a week at the Palace several months ago consisted solely of his 20-minute "Teleportation Device" routine.

He was also emceeing, but as I recall the only magic he performed was during the aforementioned set.

David Regal once did the parlor with just three tricks. It was a great show.

I see nothing wrong with it as it plays now.

It is an excellent presentation of a beginner magician that resonates with all of us who have been "misled" by catalog ads.
